Gas should rocket any day now

Well here we go again. Rita will push gas prices much further than Katrina did. And I was just getting use to gas at just under $ 2.89/gal. They shut down refineries already, so tomorrow the price should start to rocket.

They were going to lower prices more than they originally did, but held off in anticipation of Rita. Hopefully this means it won't be as drastic as we all know it will be.

Due to the magnitude of the storm in conjunction with the number of oil platforms in that region; it is almost a given that prices will eclipse the recent highs.

This is a cool representation of where your money goes when you buy gas. (I got htis from "How Stuff Works")The federal tax is around 18 cents/gal and state tax is around 20 cents/gal. So if the government(s) wanted to help us a bit, they could temporarily lower the taxes until times get better!

Obviously the tax is not the main problem today. Because the graph is three years old the numbers could be completely different today?

i live down in Orlando and the gas is around $2.47 so not sure if its going to change around here!

Now they are saying that in some areas, it could hit $5 a gallon, depending on how the hurricane hits.

I doubt it will make it that high, but I would expect to be back over $3 this weekend.

The lowest prices for gas in my area is still at $2.85 / gallon. My brother in LA is only paying $2.77 / gallon. I've given up and drive my Runner only when absolutely necessary. I've only driven like 100 miles this month compared to my usual 300 to 500 per week!

If gas goes any higher or stays at this high rate for very long expect a hard depression. Discresionary spending (eating out, going to movies, etc.) will drastically cut back when people can't afford to drive anywhere.
