Gas smell on startup 2004 V8

My 2004 4runner V8 has done this since new. Now at 75k miles.
When starting up cold and immediately putting it into gear, for example pulling out of or into the garage, I get a smell of gas. It been check by the dealer twice over the years and they could not find any issues. Seems to be getting worse.

Any ideas what might be wrong?

Mine does the exact same thing sometimes even when idling and if you have the heater on you can smell it too I don't think there's anything wrong with it

Same thing with my V6.

Are you sure it is gas you are smelling? 4Runners are known for their exhaust smell, especially if in an enclosed space like a garage. And on start-up, with the richer fuel mixture, that will cause a more sulfur like smell to the exhaust.

Does it also ping on cold start up? That would also further that on a cold start up it could be just a richer mixture until the engine warms up. I had a slight gas smell and found out a had a tiny hole in my exhaust towards the tail pipe. Well after replacing it (with a sweet sounding Gibson ss) I still get that slight smell.

No, no pinging.

I really notice if I start it cold and move quickly and stop.
For example I had it parked in the driveway for the day. At night I quickly pulled into the garage. Moved all of about 20-25 feet. And shut if off. Then pretty strong gas smell.

Other time, if I start it and back out of the garage quickly and stop in the driveway, again gas smell.

But has been this way as long as I can remember and I bought it new in 2004.

this is normal haha. all cars are like this.

I must be lucky since in over 20 cars/SUV's this is the only one to experience this since I said goodbye to the carburetor.

Fuel injector o rings maybe?

I figured out it was a leaking/cracked manifold which is a common problem with the V8

I have noticed the same thing happens to mine. V8 with 165k and leaky ass manifolds. I'm assuming it has something to do with that but I am not too concerned. If it still isn't fixed after the manifolds are re-done I will still be find with it tbh. As long as I don't have an obvious gas leak somewhere I am not too worried.

Yeah I can only smell it when I'm stopped but if you are driving or have recirc on when stopped you wont smell it

Mine does the same thing. I just bought my 2006 with the 4.7 and this is the first V8 car I have driven in quite a while. I dont recall any of my 4cyl cars doing this.. but from what I have read this is completely normal.

Exhaust smell

I just received my 'new to me' 2006 V8, sat in park with the engine on playing with the Bluetooth and was getting knocked out by the exhaust fumes from the vents. Recirc helps, but I guess I need to look at the manifold! Bummer, first mod I guess.
