Gas smell

I noticed a slight smell of gas at the rear of my 2000 4runner, is there a filter or some other fitting near the tank? where else could it come from?

Inside or outside? The pump and sending unit are in tank. You can access this from under the driver's side rear seat. Pull the seat bottom up and pull the carpet back. You will immediately smell gas if it's leaking there. You'll have to drop the tank and install a new gasket. If you have to drop the tank I'd throw a new pump in while it's down.
