Gasket maker on your axle flange?

I was reading one of my bookmarked links, and it recommends putting gasket maker on your axle flange before reinstalling your rear axles. I've never ever done that, and I've never ever had a rear axle leak. The FSM doesn't say anything about it either.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it would actually be bad to gasket the axle flange, because if you did blow an axle seal, you wouldn't know about it right away.

I've replaced inner and outter seals, never used FIPG.
