Gauge Light Swap Question - Not LED

I have done a lot of reading regarding the LED conversion for my 2000 but has anybody just done a swap for non LED lights? Just switch out the green for white bulbs made by Sylvania? I have mixed feelings about the LEDs with the hot spots, longevity and finding bulbs that actually look good together. I have done two different orders for bulbs and I wasn't happy with the results either time. Getting tired of paying for shipping back and fourth.

Either way I need to replace quite a few bulbs (cig lighter, glove box, rear window, ash tray, ECF) but was just trying to think of other options. Seems everybody just went with green or LED. If anybody has done this and can provide pics that would be awesome!

I have the oem bulbs but I took off all the green sleeves and honestly it looks sooooo much better then stock. I'll post a pic in a few. Or its in my build.

Took a look at your build thread. Found the picture with the green sleeves. They almost appear to have a red hue to them. Is that accurate or just the pictures?

I did this the other day because I was sick of the dim green. I had extra bulbs anyways so I put 3 new bulbs in the cluster, and removed the green condom off the key ring and heater panel. It gives it a nice bright amber look, roughly like 3000K on this chart...maybe a little darker.

I wouldn't call it red, its more of an amber but imho it is 10xs better with out the green!! I put a red bulb in my ashtray light and key ring just to be fancy and match the face deck. I would recommend it!

Thanks for the input. Not the ideal color I am going for but I guess it is better than paying 5 bucks a bulb at the dealership for the stock green. I was hoping it would be more of a white color than an amber. I will see if I can make it work with a blue colored deck.

Pulled off the green "condoms" and replaced some burned out bulbs. I'd say that chat from JSwain is pretty accurate in terms of color. Cheap solution to the green if you don't want the LED swap. Have you a clock change color that matches the new dash color?

this is mine minus the green rubbers compared to the others. but i still want them brighter! do newer cars have led's or really bright standard bulbs?

Does anyone know what the later model Tacomas that have amber lighting have, Is it just an amber condom sleeve thing?
If possible I would like to make the lighting in my 4runner match the tacoma.

i put some green bulbs in from superbrightleds, and the bulb light started to discolor. I think using different colored condoms over white bulbs would be the way to go. I think Autometer makes some that they use for the bulbs in their guages.
