OK I have a 1995 4 runner 4x4. My problem is, that it seems to take a long time to shift out of 3rd gear. It seems to shift out of 3rd gear at around 45-48 mph. Is this normal, or something I should look into. 1st ans 2nd gear seems to shift fast, but as I said, when it goes into 3rd, it seems to take a long time to shift out.of 3rd. Please help. Also, all fluids ar good.

I have the exact same problem, except mine will stay in 3rd till i get up to 75mph, and it still might not shift. And rarely it will shift just fine into fourth. im planning on geting it on a transmission tester machine thing.

Man I thought I had problems. 75! I really do think you should have this checked out ASAP. That for sure is not right.

My 95 (3.0 4x4) had a similar problem. In cold weather when driving it for the first 5-10 miles it was VERY stubborn in shifting into overdrive, it would just stay in 3rd while my rpms were above 4,000...very annoying. I had it looked at a couple times and no one ever found anything wrong. In warmer weather it wouldnt happen.

Sorry, I have no solution, I just understand how annoying this is.

My 4Runner has been in the shop for two weeks now and they still haven't found whats wrong. they replaced the cellanoids and that didn't help I guess. MY pockets aren't this deep! I'll post again when we find a sollution.

The 4Runner was in the shop for over two months and they tried plenty of things to help the problem but it still doesn't shift. I can drive at 65 for 10 miles and it will never shift into overdrive. Im afraid it's really screwing with my gas mileage and its so annoying. If anyone has a sollution or has something to say about this problem then please let me know. Its a great truck otherwise and I love every part about it. Only has 117K and it's in awseome condition. I don't want to have to sell it. If it comes down to having to sell it I will look for a 3rd gen. probably.

thanks everybody

It is in the overdrive, all the 3.0L auto are like this. when cold untill they warm up they will not shift into overdrive.

Mine does it too...not as bad as yours the way it sounds yours never shift out? even after it warms up?

it acts the same whether it is warm or not. Sometimes it will shift into overdrive just fine and i'll drive for a few minutes and then it will shift back into 3rd for no reason (even when im coasting down a big hill at 65mph)! Most of the time it doesn't shift into OD at all, so I have to drive under the speed limit so I don't overwrap the engine too much. And also I have noticed that the transmission acts the same every time I drive a certain road. is there anything I can tell the mechanic to specifically look for?

thanks for the input anything helps.

After taking the truck in and out of the shop for 3 months or so they finally fixed my problem. The 4Runner finally shifts how I would like it to. I was getting 10-13 miles the gallon with the problem. I guess they replaced some sensor and the thermostat and some other stuff to get the job done. Next week I have to take it in cause the front brakes are shot. Hopefully this is not just a money pit!
