gearing and lockers

Drivablity with rear Locker

I have an 88 4runner 4cycl/5spd combo. I'm looking at regearing the differentials for 33's and setting up lockers f/R.

The plan is 4.88 gears with ARB air lockers in the front and Aussie Lockers in the rear. I'll be getting Aussies now and ARB's in a few months.

But it will be about a month before I can get the tires after I regear, so my first question is; what damage will regearing to 4.88 with 235/75R15 tires do?

Also how much will the Aussie Lockers or just lockers in general in the rear affect drivability?

Actually, I think you will have lots of power. The problem will be top end speed and mileage. As long as you aren't doing long interstate commutes then it shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks for the replies. But could you clarify something for me.

What do you mean when you say I'll lose top end speed. Will it be like I can't run 100 everywhere, or will i be hurting just running 55-70?

What about with the lockers? What can I expect from those? Something like Aussie's or ez-lockers

Without changing the tire size, if you go from 4.10 to 4.88 you are increasing the rpm's at the same mph by 18.7% (4.88/4.11 = 1.187).

To put this in perspective, if you normally drove at 3000 rpm (no idea what speed this would be at the moment), then to drive the same mph you will have to run 3560 rpm (assuming same transmission gear used).

Clear?

It's probably about like trying to drive without 5th gear....hard to do 75 without 5th gear!

I did 5.29's with 32" tires for about a week and it was a pretty crappy week.

I would imagine stock tires with 4.88's would be pretty close to what I went through. It's tolerable but just barely. I had to run 70 to keep up with 55mph traffic.

With the 36's my rpm's are a dead ringer for 4.10 with the stock tires.

I don't need to reply about the gearing because these guys have pretty much covered that.
As for the lockers, with the ARB you won't notice a difference if it's not activated, but you will notice that driving in the rain will be a little more fun with the Aussie in the rear. My brother just installed a Lock-rite in the rear of him Tacoma and he does alot more fishtailing around corners when it's slick out.
If you're gentle to your rig then you won't really notice a difference. You will probably experience some added tire wear also from installing the lunchbox locker.
