Gen 3 T4R - Engine and trim advice

I'm looking at buying a third generation 4Runner, and I was wondering how the 4 Cylinder engine is. I know it's pretty reliable, but in terms of drive-ability and passing power, is it as good as the V6? I won't be doing any towing, so that's not a major concern. Fuel economy is a secondary concern, I won't be putting a lot of miles on this vehicle. I'm really hoping to find a 5-speed, but they don't appear to be very common on the used market around here.

Also looking for any advice about things to look for in a third Gen 4 runner. Must have options, common trouble spots and that kind of thing. Maybe a quick run-down of what the trim levels mean.

The V6 is more powerful than the 4 cylinder. If you get the option go with the V6.

4 cyl isn't bad, but doesn't have enough advantages over the V6. Stock, I got about 21MPG on the freeway with the V6. With the 4cyl, people have reported ~24MPG? Not that much difference. If you do end up hauling or towing, that gap closes even more. Reliability wise, the 6cyl is just as reliable. Both engines have their quirks, but both very reliable. You will appreciate the power, especially when going over mountain passes, and even when turning on the A/C.

Manual transmissions are hard to come by, but if that's your thing, wait for one. One will turn up. I have no problems with my auto, though. I've always been a manual guy before my 4Runners and my current Tacoma, but it's really not bad at all. Plus, I can eat while driving easier.

Option wise, try to get one with an e-locker. There is a button next to the steering wheel that looks like this (compliments of sonoransteel.com)

Also, personally, while Limiteds are nice, I'd get an SR5. First, I don't like leather. Secondly, I believe most SR5's came with the J-shift lever. I had the push-button transfer case lever and it did give me a bit of trouble on my 98 Limited. Third, I just didn't like the Limited two-tone cladding that much. This is all personal preference.

Look to see if the timing belt has been changed. Usually, there is a sticker on the timing belt cover (right next to "3400 four cam" sticker). Or ask the owner if it has been changed. Toyota recommends changing it every 90k miles (along with the water pump). Look for leaks underneath. Look at the swaybar bushings and endlinks, as they may be broken (easy fix, but good for negotiation). Make sure it shifts in and out of 4WD smoothly (also 4LO. And to put it in 4LO, shift to Neutral, then to 4LO). If it has a rear locker, see if that works (must be in 4LO). Can't think of much more right now. I'm sure others will chime in.

I agree with the above posts.

Both engines are very reliable, but you will really apprecialte the extra horsepower that the v6 will give you.

Definitely look through top4runners.com for all the trim levels and options. It's the most complete list I have seen for 4Runners. I would recommend the V6 as well. You may think you have no need for it, but the 4 cyl. is a poor choice for any midsize SUV, especially a truly truck based one like the 4Runner. The resale will be easier for a V6 too whenever you decide to get rid of it. I also agree that the timing belt change is a big thing to look for, but look for leaks on the rear axle seals specifically, since it's common with the higher mileage runners.

I just recently bought myself a 00 4cyl runner. Didn't plan on taking it off road so I stuck with 2wd.
I am averaging between 22-24mpg in the city. It just crossed the 100k mark and it's been well taken care of. So far I'm loving it. Just enough power to get me around in town.

If I ever have the itch for speed i'll jump in the supra. If I ever have the itch to go 4wd ill jump on my atv. Im sure Ill get back into 4wd trucks again just not right now. I do miss my TRD Tundra


No complaints about my 4cyl as far as passing power and reliability and it's also a 5spd.
