Gen 5 Not for Me

Went to the Auto Show in Memphis today, and finally got my hands on the new Runner.

It is a nice ride, as usual, put together well and with top quality stuff. I do like the pull-out tray in the rear compartment, better than the double-decker on my 07.

Bottom line, not nearly as attractive as mine, no V8, looks like the leather is not the same quality, AND I just don't like the chiseled look of the new.

Well said. I have an '07 V8 Limited 4WD and I LOVE it.......the way it looks and drives!! I also LOVE my V8!

Everytime I see a 2010 Runner, all I can think is....soccer mom and Honda Pilot.

Also, I love my Limited 18" wheels. I think the 2010 wheels selection is just not very exciting.

Still not feelin the 2010....... just MHO.

I think it's an upgrade aesthetically w/o question. If they had the V8, it'd make it a clear winner.
 
At first I did not like it either, however the more I see it, the more I am starting to think about trading in the 06 for one.
 
I remember hating the 4th Gens when they came out, but now I love them. I'm not feeling the new look for the 5th Gen, but given time I think it'll grow on me. Maybe not, but I'd hope a new v8 is in the works and will be put in later on. I like a full size motor without a full size SUV (i.e. Sequoia). I'd still love a test drive though...
 
not feeling the new body style either. one plus is it is a bit higher ground clearance wise, which is nice. other than that, it looks like a cousin to the seqouia to me.
 
Can you guys picture a 5th gen with the 5.7L Tundra V8 pushing almost 400HP? That would be a thing of beauty and would make be jump ship to a 5th gen right away! :lookout:
 
I don't understand why they didn't make it an option not to mention the 4wd system in the SR5/TE. I loved the part-time system in my 2000 Limited. Sometimes I wonder about Yota's decisions.
 
Got the chance to jump in one, loved the inside. This was a limited and I really didn't like all the painted surfaces, color keyed bumpers and all. I think the trail edition would be good though, didn't have it at the dealer. I'm not a fan...yet. I bet it grows on me. I didn't like the 4th gen with flat wheel wells, but the change to curved made a world of difference. Maahhh?..on the V6. It has 10 more ponies than my V8.
 
Its funny because looks are so objective and we all have our own view. When the 4th generation came out with the flat wheel wells I though they were ugly. Of course now I have one and now I actually like the 03-05 models with flat wheel wells better then the 06-09 versions. (I don't hate those years, just kind of like the flat wheel wells now.) I think they stand out a little more. I'm not sure on the 5th generation yet but I would guess after they have been around for a few years it will grow on me and once we see a couple done up right I'm sure they will be sweet. Toyota should offer the V8 however because many folks love their eights. They are losing potential buyers without it.
 
Prior to buying a 4th generation 09 constructed last August, I drove a 2010 model multiple times, and both the SR5 and a Limited model. As much as I wanted to like them, the short version of the story is the 5th generation was simply too big in the end. Really it's just a little smaller than the old version Sequoia and looks a lot like one. In addition it's looks a little boxy, but that's a matter of taste.

It does have a clearly superior ground clearance, and the room for back seat passengers is excellent. However the trade off is several hundred pounds heavier, and not nearly as agile as least to my driving impressions. The other issue is the SR5 styling is just too rough around the edges. The Limited looks pretty elegant inside and pleasing to the eye on the extrior. However with a 43K price tag and very little off sticker it should look darn elegant.

I didn't mind the V6 and don't tow, but I did mind the more truck like handling. Frankly I think the 4th generation sport handling blows the 5th generation oversteer away.

Heck I would settle for the 4.6L V8, 4WD and the 7K towing capacity I need.
Make these options on an SR5 and DON'T force the consumer to buy a LOADED Limited to get them.

The current 5th Gen 4Runner simply FAILS miserably to meet my vehicle needs as currently offered.
 
Wow,another 5th gen hating thread;you know these threads aren't really different than the 10 other threads started by 4th gen owners and the complaints are the same. If the V8 was such a selling point for 4th gens then they would have put one in the 2010. Reality is the V6 outsold the V8 and with the economy and the fact that sales have dropped to only 10k Runners sold in '09 (it was over 100k 10 years ago) that Toyota has refocused the 4Runners target audience and it simply isn't for people that want to tow or need V8 power and cost to produce is probably the biggest factor.

It's not like the 4th gens are so much more capable in daily duties vs the 5th gen and with looks your going to gain admirers and lose others just like any vehicle redesign.

If sales rise significantly and the economy stabilizes then you may see some options return but ther fact that Toyota still sells most of the 4wd Runners in the $35k range is an achievement since that's what my Runner cost in late '98 and has a lot more than my 4Runner came with.

It seems 4th gen owners are taking the redesign personally and seem really butt hurt over it. Like I said how do you think 3rd gen owners felt when they saw the 4th gens which become more soccer mom like,rounded off,still low to the ground and 500lbs heavier? I did think the V8 was a nice upgrade but the 4th gen was an initial disappointment to me but in a few years it started to grow on me.

I understand some of you are pretty young and the majority of your adult lives the 4th gen has been the main 4Runner and is the only 4Runner you've owned so obviously there is a bit of biasedness but I think most of you will come around and the 5th gen will be appreciated for what it is.

If the lack of a V8 is the main complaint (and it is) then the 5th gen will be fine and will run it's cycle til the 6th gen come out.
 
RonMAIDEN, I agree for the most part. I've owned a 4runner of each generation, with my favorite being the 3rd (loved the removeable top on the 1st gen though). I just see the 4runner becoming too close to the Sequoia. They've got the RAV-4 that's a smaller soccer mom/daily driver. The 4runner IMO is the daily driver/off roader. The 4th gen strayed away from that a little, but the 5th seems to be a huge leap back.
 
I don't think the 5th gen is a huge leap backward but maybe a small one and the lack of a V8 seems to be it's biggest perceived flaw but from a true SUV definition it's more capable than the 4th gen in stock trim off road and that's what I like and on road it's not a huge difference.
Looks are subjective but I like the more truck-like personality of the 5th gen and reminds of the 3rd gens appearance so maybe I'm a bit biased but I'm simply glad there is a 5th gen since there were rumblings (and still are) that the 4Runner almost was discontinued.
 
Not to be argumentative, but I really don't see this as being a hate thread. On the contrary in my case I waited several months for the vehicle to buy one, then some more months when it didn't come up at the normal new car introduction time.

I was stunned when it came out bigger AND heavier?? While the rest of the car world is shrinking or at least staying the same size with more efficient power, Toyota took an iconic model and turned it into a replica of the last generation Seqoia. This after just coming out with a new generation Sequoia that is only just a little smaller than your average yacht, and a new generation Tundra that could double for a tractor trailor.

Hate? No, but dissapointed, confused, and wondering why? Yes.
 
I saw first one in person over the weekend. WAY too big IMHO. Looks way to much like a Seqouia. I'll be sticking w/ my v8 4th gen.

just an fyi, the 5th gen is less than an inch bigger in all dimensions than the 4th gen, and they both have the exact same wheelbase. and i don't know of ANY new car put out in the last 10 years that is lighter and smaller than the model it replaces. car makers are coming out with new compact cars because their old compact cars have grown so fat and bloated over the years that they are now put into the midsize class.
