Gen5 Cargo Area Mods/Organization/Prep

I started to see some creative ideas on the "T4R Prep Pack" thread on how some are organizing the cargo area. I thought would be great to share how each of you are maximizing the space, and what you carry in your DD TR4.

Since Gen5's either come with/without the sliding cargo tray it would interesting to see photos of how you are utilizing the space.

My rig has the prep/emergency supply box, however now I'm looking at the recovery equipment wondering whether it's practical to build something inside, reorganize box or focus on roof.

This is mine, I'm able to lockup my duty gear without worrying about theft (unless the truck is stolen) while out running errands. The box is mounted to a frame which is then mounted to the 4runner's frame, that way I can remove the box, but the drawer would need to be removed first so it's pretty secure. Way better built then my SWAT guys Tuffy box. Holds a lot of recovery gear when out on the trails. Might mount a ARB slide out to mount a fridge or some other ARB drawers to make it modular...

I have 2x 2" round L-track anchor laying around in the garage. Since I have the cargo tray, I may try to install them at the back of the tray for tying down the cargo and be able to move the tray and cargo with it. Right now I have to use the d-hook that are outside of the tray.

Actually Mace, the original intent on "prep pack" was to show what I had in my 4Runner, how I packed it and see what others were doing. I believe the "prep" title limited the scope of the thread.

Seeing what people fit in the cargo hold, and how they effectively utilize the space is the goal.

I'm too ashamed to show pictures of mine. It's a thrown together mess most of the time. Jacket, blankets/pillows, overnight bags and groceries on top of my normal stuff. I do subscribe to the milk crate and ammo box storage concept. For recovery gear you might want to swing by Tractor Supply and pick up their recovery kit made by Traveller. I was looking at shackles and straps after I got the bumper and saw this kit. It had everything you need to get started for about $20 less than all the items separately, and it was all in a bag. I've already figured out the 6' tree saver strap was a little short for a decent size base tree, but I can get a 10' strap for $20 and it will also still fit in the bag. The bag is sized so it should fit in that area to the driver's side of your box. And I figure I can just restock parts in it as they wear out or break.

Also, I just paid a minor premium for the Smittybilt name for a pair of shackles from Amazon. The first thing I did when they came in was remove the "Made in China" stickers from them. I won't be turning my nose up at Tractor Supply's stock after that.

I envy you your slide out tray. I tried to order one the day I bought mine and the parts guy looked at me like I was an alien. I guess they only come from the factory that way. I don't even know if I have the hard points to put one in mine. And what threads we've had in here about the subject have left me more confused on whether it is something I can add or not.

it is something we can add, but it's pricey, I have seen a couple more affordable aftermarket options though. I am torn between a slide out tray, or getting a drawer. I currently use a bin, but it's hard to keep my everyday stuff organized in a wide open container vs. a drawer than I can put dividers in. I'd like to see how people who just use bins keep them organized on the inside.

Thanks. I made a thread on this box awhile ago, I'll try and dig it up. This was made by a guy in my dept and he started doing them on the side, so they can be made to any dimensions you'd like.

I had my tool bag, air compressor and other gear just laying loose in back and that was not working. My solution was a 24 gallon Rubbermaid Action Packer and a Swag Off Road Baja Bin mount. I bolted the Baja Bin to the slid out tray and it's rock solid. The top piece of the Baja Bin has tie down holes so you can strap things to the top of the lid too. I like that I can easily remove the Action Packer if I need the space.

Can the mount be removed/disassembled for when you need to use space without the bin? Otherwise it's looks great!

I built a box that holds a 12" sub and miscellaneous tools. It fits behind the second or third row. Pretty pleased with how it turned out although the sub could use some more air space but I didn't want to sacrifice too much tool storage.

Car-camping Night Shelf

While not strictly pertaining to "cargo" per se, this put-your-stuff-here-when-sleeping-in-the-4Runner shelf has made it much nicer when we spend nights sleeping in the back of our 4Runner. I posted a few pics up on another thread, and someone PM'ed for more details, so here goes.

Shelf 1.0 was for built for our much-missed but too pavement-oriented Mazda Tribute, and when we traded it in on the 4Runner we decided that a new, bigger Shelf 2.0 was in order. It was made in two pieces to make it easier to pack and haul around, but quick and easy to bolt together when needed. It's initial use was on a 6-day, 5 night trip around the White Rim Trail in Canyonlands N.P., and it made the trip much more enjoyable - and anything that helps with the wife's attitude after 6 days without plumbing has gotta be a good deal.

It's supported by 2 chains hung on the hooks in the headliner and by a couple of brackets that slide into the cargo cover mounting places in the rear side panels. At night, the usual stuff lives on the shelf, and it's mounted high enough so that even with the 8" thick airbed our legs and feet fit underneath. After the trip, it was decided that there was really no need for the bigger size, so I made new chains and mounting brackets for the smaller original shelf so it would fit the 4Runner.

The design is real bonehead - the perimeter is just lengths of 1"x2" fir with a 1/8" groove dado'ed around the inside, pegboard is used for the shelf surface and dividers, and I ran a bead of wood glue around all the joints before painting it. The brackets that rest in the cargo-cover mounts are just shelf standards with the ends ground down to fit and then wrapped with electrical tape to avoid scratches. I need to re-locate the chain mounting points (from the Mazda) so the chains hang plumb, and re-do the bracket mounts with a single piece of 1"x3" or whatever that goes all the way across.

Where did you source those parts? If I can squeeze my 410 bass cab in next to that box, this will be the way I go for sure.
