General question.....

Hello,

We are looking to get 4runner this coming winter. I have read new 4runner will have new V6 engine and (new tranny?). From research looks like they are coming to dealer end of 2017 or early 2018.

1. Is this same engine in new Tacoma? Is it good as 4.0 V6? Or should i stick with 4.0 V6 when im ready to get one.

2. 4th vs 5th V6 has same engine with minor changed, right? Reliability is same?

Reason why im asking is, i really do love 1GR period lol

2003 4runner (since new), 170K miles/13 years. Zero issues.
2011 Tacoma (since new), 40K miles/5 years. Zero issues.

I honestly not sure if its better try new or stick with old.

Little advice will very helpful. Thank you.

There is no new engine coming as far as we know... Most likely scenario is the 5th gen is the last 4Runner as we know it, but only time will tell. No confirmed info expect that things will stay exactly the same for 2018.

5th gen has the 1grfe 4.0 with dual VVTI. It's basically the same motor as your other trucks with very slight improvements in power via higher static compression, weight reduction of the pistons and both intake and exhaust variable valve timing. Very reliable, not so great on power. In fact the throttle mapping (called eco mode) makes it feel a bit sluggish in stock from.. but it will go if you mash it and last 300+K with simple care and feeding.

Why did you say that this might be the last T4R? I saw a video of a similar vehicle in their line-up (Prado sounds familiar) back in 2015 or 2016 and it looked like what an updated T4R might be expected to look like inside and out. It had a 6spd automatic transmission; the interior looked similar to the design language in the just introduced Camry and in the Lexus IS since 2014. The video wasn't the best production value as it was a person reviewing the features and such rather than a high production value video like Motor Trend or Chris Harris might produce and I want to say it was set in Malaysia or Japan; again, I'm going off memory from a couple years ago. Has Toyota hinted that they've had a change of heart for the T4R like they did with the FJC? That would really suck.

To OP: in addition to replies above, I would say that 5th gen 1grfe 4.0 should be even more reliable than 4.0 in 4th gen –at least versus early years (2003-2005) models, as Head gasket issues were reported for those years- not a lot, but enough to be known… so I do not think you will be disappointed from reliability stand point. :cheers:

Yes, there were many hints posted here by insiders that the 4r was on the chopping block. It's pretty obvious they had no plans to be selling this truck in 2018, but demand and a change in the political environment has kept it going for now. Hard to say what will happen, but it's obvious they don't see it as a long term focus for the brand. The Prado is sold here as the GX but only with the v8 option.
