General service tine has come ! questions

Hi everyone !

it's a time to do general service of my 04 4runner V8
i need get new oil what brand should i use and how many liters of lube i need to buy ?

rear breaks are worn out . I want replace rotors and pads .prices on amazon are starting around 70$ and more for set . what rotors and pads should i get ?
Also I'm going to clean up calipers and put new seals on
them.


timing belt - i think the best way is to get a timing belt kit from amazon (price is usually lower than in a part stores)
should i get a water pump as well ? I don't have missing coolant and any problems with cooling so far.

What else should I check ? car can 70000 miles

It takes 6.5 quarts of oil. It says in your manual how much that is in liters. You might want to buy a little more since it depends on how much you drain out. If you use a larger than normal filter it will take more oil. I don't think it matters much what brand you use. If you are in Canada you could go with 0W30 for better starting and cold weather protection, but that would mean synthetic, an it will be a lot more expensive than conventional oil. 5W30 is what was originally specified, but Toyota is recommending that or 5W20 now, per a TSB. 0W## oil is the same as 5W## oil at operating temperature, but better at startup temperatures (even in warm climates) because it doesn't thicken as much.

It would be a good idea to grease the driveshafts. On a 4x4 (are all the V8s are 4x4?) there are six grease fittings. If you get a grease gun and a tube of grease it's not that difficult to do yourself. It took me a couple hours the first time, but if you lift the truck or drive up on ramps it would be easier/faster.

The timing belt isn't necessary until 90,000 miles or some number of years. At 10 years it may be a good idea to do if it's never been done.

You may want to change the oil in the differentials and transfer case. The manual tells you what kind of oil you need. There is a great DIY thread here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/maint...ntial-transfer-case-fluids-pics-included.html

You could change the transmission fluid. Depending on the transmission, it may be "sealed" and supposedly never need changing, but it still doesn't hurt to change it as long as you put the right stuff in. It can be difficult to get a lot of the old fluid out, since the pan only holds a portion of it.

It's probably a good idea to pump new brake fluid through while you are working on the brakes. A lot of cars call for it to be changed every 2-3 years, but I don't think Toyota specifies an interval. Brake fluid is extremely cheap, and the ABS/VSC/TCS brake controller (not sure what it's officially called) is expensive to replace if it fails. Fresh fluid will help keep it happy.

If you do the water pump, you may want to put in new coolant. I can't remember how long the stuff in there is supposed to last, and it depends on if it's red or pink, but there are corrosion fighting additives that get used up over time. Probably not necessary, but it wouldn't hurt.

Your English is better than many North Americans, so no worries.

I bought 7 quarts of Mobil 1 5w-30 synthetic motor oil, and 7 quarts Mobil 1 75w-90 gear oil for the front/rear differentials and transfer case, and finally Mobil 1 grease for the drive shafts. I wanted to swap to full synthetic in my oils/grease on my 04.

does anyone has any suggestions what brakes should i get ? the old rotors (rear) are really bad .. i guess previous owner was driving the car with frozen calipers .

I'm going to rebulid calipers and clean up inside where piston is .

I'll leave water pump cause there is no problem with cooling system.

It's a good time to do some once in a 100K miles maintenance! I have 125K miles. 2004 v8. I just changed my front/rear diff fluids with Lucas 80W90. Transfer case with Lucas Synthetic 75W90. Motor oil with Castrol GTX 5w-30. I had a clunk noise when I stopped/braked, and greasing the six zerk fittings on the shaft fixed it. I also did a power steering fluid drain and fill. Still on my list is ATF drain and fill and brake fluid change. Also in process of rustproofing three skid plates. Water pump, tensioner, timing belt and plugs were done by previous owner.
