So my 2000 4runner apparently does not have a cabin air filter for the HVAC...how do I get rid of a almost musky smell that comes out of the vents for the first few minutes it's on? Spray frebreeze under the dash with the recirculate button on?
Checked youtube and they have some good videos on this subject.
Seems there are generally two methods:
1. Open all the vehicle windows. Turn the car on with the blower on full and the air recirculate off. Go out to the windshield find the air intakes for driver and passenger and spray them with lysol spray. The lysol will circulate through the vents and kill the odor causing bacteria. This method will likely require reapplication from time to time.
2. There are Evaporator Coil cleaners that you spray into the housing and kills the bacteria. I think this is a longer lasting solution.
as a general mild odor remover just leave some dryer sheets in the car
You may have leaves and debris in the fan housing. Little leaves and stuff can easily get past the cowl screen and end up in the fan. I've got the same musty smell when I first turn on the A/C. I'm gonna pull the evaporator and a/c housing and see if there is anything in mine.
