Geting horriable gas millage help!

Hello My Father Purchesed a Toyota 4runner From His Toyota Dealership he works at a 2002 Sport Edition 4x4 for 3600.Great Price Right? Well the Rig had about 245,000 miles. Transmision Goes out 2 weeks later like i told my dad it would if he bought it . But changed it out and only Problem Is Its unknown how many miles on the tranny, Thati have now Long Story Short Its Mine now. Im Used to Driving v8 pick up i cant help but Notice the Gas Millage is Horriable on this Thing I was Geting About 425 In My old silverado. Now I can Bearly Get up to 280 and at the Most 300 On a Road trip. I did a full Tune up Wireset,Coils,Spark Plugs,Fuel FIlter all denzo Oil change Transmission Flush,Cleened out the AIrHog Filter it came with . Even Installed 2 HIGHFLOW CATS. Now i Dont see Any Diffrence Mybe im asking a little to much out of a truck with over 260K now but i just dont understand its a 6 Banger.Is there Anything i can do Switcheing to synthetic Trans and Diff? I know Synthetic will kill my motor so its sitll Useing Dino. I Just wish i could get 400 out of it but Im Prob Having a Pipe Dream.. But I love this Truck now ..

Have you actually calculated the mileage? 280 to a tank means you are getting around 18mpg. Which is pretty decent. You only have a 18.2 gallon tank, so that sounds about right.

It doesn't hold 28 gallons like your silverado, so of course you are going to need to fill up more often, but at less $$$

280 is about right for a stock 4x4. You do know that you are only putting about 15-16 gallons in right? That works out to about 17-19 mpg. 400 on a tank is not gonna happen. I bet you were putting 20+ gallons in your pickup every time you filled it.

Sorry about Spelling... Well I was Thinking Around 20ish..But its Annoying To have a Half a Tank and it be gone by a day and a half... I Love it so i put up with it. I just Think Its Capable of geting alot More Gas Milage out of it. Becuase Im Working on a Step up to get 25 highway with my 5.7 silverado I saw Few Suburbans Do it..but i know its not a V8. But Is It Possible to get in the range of 360?

I don't know if its the same for you in your state but you should also consider the gas. Here in Utah most gas companies add something to the gas to decrease the emissions during the colder months. This causes a significant decrease in gas mileage too.

Mine's V6 2wd and the best I've ever got is 21 mpg. One trip I got 332 miles on one tank but that was with the gas light on for a while.

No. Its not possible.

Sorry, but there is no way a 5.7L is getting 25mpg in a full size. I've owned two Tahoes, 3 Burbs, and a C1500. Routinely got 400mi to a tank, however that was a 28 gallon tank. The burb is a 42 gallon tank. Best I ever got was 18.5mpg and I am religious about calculating every tank.

I would bet that you aren't calculating each tank and just think you are getting better mileage than you really are. Plain and simple is that 19mpg is about the best you will get in it on the hwy.

My FJ62 Landcruiser got 11 MPG if i was lucky. 280 miles out of a 18 gal tank is pretty damn amazing if you ask me. I have been enjoying only having to fill up 14 gallons. This sounds like a nonissue.

im talking about when they tweek the motors it gets around 25 Mpg if i can find i can show a thread and the specfics on it .

Im getting 215 miles to a tank with a 4banger
Id be happy with 280.


And Ive owned two LS1 cars and neither got 25 mpg unless cruising downhill.



25mpg from a silverado just doesnt sound right.

LOL! 360miles , yep possible if you are carrying 2 or 3 five gallon jerry cans. If I got 18-19 I'd be jumping for joy. :thumb3:-Josh

Move the spare tire to the cargo area and mount a 26 gallon tank from an F150 for an auxiliary tank on your 4Runner where the spare tire use to be located; you'll be running 700 miles between fills!

Thermostat idea

I just replaced my thermostat today (was stock) with the coldest temp one I could find online (not the 160 degree TRD thermostat, but a 165 degree model) ... After my next fill up I am going to calculate my mileage... I typically get around 15mpg (215-240 miles per tank). The reason I tried this was because I was told by a mechanic that this should help with mileage a little bit... I read another forum where people were arguing about it hurting your mileage but I will find out for myself seems how either way I am out less than 50$.

I only got 300 miles to a tank when the truck was new...

The second tank went down to 280 miles lol

Im at 230-260 right now depending on where I drive. 212K and still running like day one!

I figured it to be the higher octane gas it was filled with when it was built in Japan.

Keep us updated but I don't think you'll see a noticeable difference. Now switching to a electric fan setup might help and make a difference, but I'm not sure if its worth the cost and work.

The lower temp t-stat is an interesting thought. It may be the opposite thinking. Lower temp should make the engine run rich which should improve performance but lower MPG.

Let us know what you find out.

also I call BS on "my V8 5.7 gets 25" my family has a tahoe, it has gotten 12 to 16 for as long as I can remember.

I use ww.fuelly.com to track my mpg. just enter everything from the gas receipt and you get a nice chart.

Thermostat Update

So after 2 tanks of calculating mileage I've actually improved mileage slightly. I filled my tank with regular (CA) fuel and the first 25 miles of the tank were spent wheeling at Holy Jims and when I filled up again and calculated I had still managed 15mpg. The second tank I calculated was majority city driving and a few times having a led foot due to hitting every red light (typical for me) and I got 15.5mpg. If I were on a road trip and drove conservatively I estimate 17-19mpg. Not that much of an improvement but every little bit helps.

Sorry, but 400 miles on a tank in a Silverado sounds just as plausible as your grammar, try again and there may be an answer. Also, just a hair brained theory, but maybe what you think is a silverado, was actually a cobalt or something :bash:
