Getting a new windshield tomorrow

Driving home from MD, I was behind the cab of an 18 wheeler. (no trailer just the cab) From in between the left rear double tire a golf ball sized rock came rocketing out, curved upward and to the right and struck my windshield right in front of the rear view mirror. At first I didnt see any damage due to the location but as I continued driving I noticed a crack developing. It moved its way down about half the width of the windshield and made a left turn and went about another 10inches. It was growing each bump of the road and my subs.

Called SafeLite - they will be here tomorrow to replace it for $250 which I really dont think is bad at all.

Anything I should look out for? I plan on sitting in the car to ensure that the new windshield does not distort my vision as I have been in cars where the windshield is not completely "even" causing a distorted view. This is the first of any of my cars/parents cars that need a replacement windshield. I am particularly impressed with their service thus far from the professionalism of their call staff to the fact that they emailed me a picture of the gentleman that would be coming to fix it.

I'm actually glad I'm getting a new one as I was disappointed with the way the original hydrophobic windshield preformed w/ wipers due to the amount of haze that it created. I asked and the replacement has no special coating to repel water which I think will increase visibility while using wipers.

Sorry to hear about your windshield. I just came on here and did a search for safelite. How was your experience? Are you good with the new windshield?

I'm thinking about replacing mine instead of having a couple of chips fixed. They are quoting me around $200 for everything here in San Antonio.

Sorry to hear about your windshield...it's a common problem it seems, but if the rock was that big there probably wasn't too much that could withstand it anyway.

Did you call safelite or did you do an online quote? I'm asking because I'm thinking about replacing my windshield. It has a chip in a pretty annoying place. The online quote quoted me $175 plus tax, and $8 for moldings (if necessary). That would be around $200. This is also for San Antonio, Texas.

If you haven't already, check it out online and see if they'd honor the price if the $50 or so means that much to you.

Lol the name of the thread is getting a new windshield tomorrow that I created about a month ago so I can no longer save that $$ but thanks for the heads up. I cannot be happier with the performance of the windshield in the rain. The stock one has a hydrophobic coating on it preventing any windshield wipers from clearly wiping away the water. The new one is flawless and works perfectly in the rain with my bosch icons. Good luck - you can't beat a lifetime warranty that safelite gives you.

I did not know that was a special coating on the windshield! I thought it was the washer fluid doing that!! Now it all makes since to see those beads fly when it rains all the time, even after I wash it.

Anyway, thanks for letting me know. As long as the chips don't develop into cracks and spread I'll probably replace it within the next month or so.

Anything specific? I wouldn't expect everyone to be completely satisfied with any company - but if you could share your experiences it may help some of us to know what to look out for.

I had Safelite replace the glass on my '97 Camry and they were great. From the staff to the glass itself.

Is it the glass itself? Warranty problems? The particular shop?

Here's a copy of Safelite/Elite Auto Glass Warranty:

Automobile glass is warranted against defects in material or workmanship for as long as you own the vehicle in which the glass is installed so long as such defects are brought to the attention of Safelite within 30 days of discovery of a defect. Truck sliding back glass is warranted against defects in material and workmanship for two years from the date of installation as shown on the invoice.

This warranty does not cover leaks, stress cracks, or related damage in connection with installations to vehicles having damage or rust on the pinchweld. Safelite will use commercially reasonable efforts to advise you of the existence of such damage or rust prior to removal of existing glass; however, it is often not possible to do this. I have a quote for $234.95 from Safelite and another quote for $140.00 from Advanced Auto Glass.

I had a '93 Jeep Grand Cherokee done twice by them. The first time they left sealer all over the dash.. the second time the windshield leaked like a sieve and ended up ruining my headliner and information display.(It can rain real hard here in Texas). They were sorry, but no go on any repairs other than resealing the windshield.. Both times they ended up putting the rear view mirror in the wrong place and I had to move it. (It was an electric mirror and the wiring cover dictated the position of the mount. They chose to ignore this).

When I called regarding my '88 BMW M3, they were insistant that it used the same windshield as a regular E30 even after I pointed out it was model specific - wrong!

Others have had similar or worse problems w/ these guys. Do a little searching on other forums and you'll see what I mean. I'm not just trolling this forum and bad mouthing guys w/ no reason. They earned my disrespect.

That's a real big presumption you're making there stating that the design of the windshield was bad. I ended up owning that truck for 10+ years and the only time it ever leaked thru 3 windshields was after they worked on it the second time. I was not impressed with the quality of their work.

I used Safelite to replace the windshield on my wife's Honda a while back. The service was great. The only thing the installer warned us of was to keep the windows cracked about an inch for 24 hours (the car sits in the garage anyway) to ensure the sealer sets properly.
