Getting frustrated with the 4Runner

Over the past year, rust has begun peeking out all over the body and also on the front and rear bumpers that I had replaced. I still haven't been able to fix the front bumper from when I was in an accident over 3 years ago, I can't find anyone to weld the bracket on for me.

I've thought about trading her in for a 4th Gen but the idea of having a car payment again is no fun to me.

Just venting and wishing I didn't live in Ohio to experience all the rusting!!

Try living in Michigan if you think the rust is bad in Ohio.

I found a local sheet metal / fab place to do some welding for me.

I also have a '99, live in Columbus, and have started to get the same little rust spots on the body in odd places. I've looked at a few YouTube videos and have some ideas on how I'll handle it. I'm waiting until it's a bit warmer to do the work though. My plan is gently rub some abrasive rubbing compound on the rust spot. If that works and cleans the rust away, then I'll clean the rest of the panel and throw a light spray of clear coat over it, perhaps with some touch up paint on top. I also have the rusty bumper problem, but both dented so I'm waiting to put on an after-market tube bumper on the rear and ARB on the front. I'm looking at those dents as an opportunity to get a bumper with higher clearance. I do know someone who might weld the bracket for you, but I don't think it would be free. I can vouch for their welding skills though. Lemme know if you want the guys info.

not to sound mean but I am sure if you looked hard enough you could solve the bumper issue.

Here in San Diego there a LOTS of shops that work on trucks and also do fabrication and welding.

You problem sounds like it would be easy to solve if you get ahold of someone who
a) knows toyotas & b) capable of welding or fab work

just sand the rust down and spray anti-rust stuff all over it then maybe seal it with some clear coat easy stuff, as for bumper homemade tube bumper ftw lol

I just replace the rear shocks on my 99 limited and the top nut came undone with just a ratchet and a 14mm socket.

I don't miss living up north at all.


If you don't want payments, drive down south, trade your 4runner in for another along with some cash.

But if I sanded it down wouldn't I have to repaint it white since its on the body? I am dying to take the running boards off but I can't because its nothing but rust under them.

Are you saying you can't because
A) the bolts are too rusty to remove OR
B) the underside of your 4runner is so rusty it would be and eye sore?

If you are talking about the chrome bumpers, the aluminum foil dipped in Diet Coke trick works amazingly well on aftermarket bumper pieces.

No the running boards come off fine, theres just a bit of rust on certain spots under them.

My rear bumper has a huge rust spot on it now, along with the replaced front bumper is getting a bunch of tiny rust spots all over it.

If it wasn't white it might not be so bad..but I can try to post some pics later on today.

I always cringe at the sight of rusty undercarriages. Might rain a lot here, but we don't have rust issues! Got any pics?
