getting most the oil out ?

I drove my 4runner up on a pair of those plastic triangler blocks to access the oil drain plug but I am a bit puzzled. (tilted the front)

the manual specifies that with the filter change the v6 should require 5.5 quarts, but my truck only took 5 quarts and the dipstick level is between the 2 lines/dots.

did i miss getting 1/2 quart of old oil out when i tilted the truck???

The V-8 specifies 6.5. That takes it halfway between the dipstick points. 7 quarts takes it to full. Apparently, Toyota is applying the logic of specifying halfway between the dipstick points instead of to the full line where additional oil is not good, but the dipstick doesn't say add until a quart low.

I would add until you are at least halfway between the dipstick points. Leaving a half quart old oil in would be no big deal, just pay real close attention next oil change and see what happened.
