I debadging tomorrow on my 97 Limited. The gold is getting the black pearl treatment. My question is - What badge (if any) is rivited in? I know the grill badge comes off with a few screws. But I think I heard that a badge on the rear gate is rivited in. Any truth to that? Thanks

I just debadged my 96 SR5. The "T" symbol on the back had two posts top and bottom. The "4runner" had 4 small plastic posts. I think I've heard the newer ones only have 3. I used dental floss and when I hit a post just tried to clear all adhesive around it (pretty brittle). I don't think any where riveted in. If there is one it might be the "T" on the back. If so mine might have broken before I took it off and was just held there by adhesive. If you don't mind me asking, how much is it to get it painted black pearl?

Scrub away, the adhesive is a pain. I used goo gone.

I just picked up a '97 Limited with the gold as well, it's got to go! Do you have a line on the black pearl badges yet? I read somewhere that for the earlier 3rd gens we can order them individually and not as a set, any truth to that. When I debadged my Corolla I ordered just the rear 'T' from a Camry. Good fit. Post some pics when you're finished.

My gold emblems have faded and are half gold/chrome. Looks like garbage. As far as the "Black Chrome" emblems, im gonna be repainting them myself. I'll post some pick later.
But my original question still hasn't been answered - "Will all the emblems come off with fishing line or are there any that are riveted in?"

I think with the new badge placement in '99 the only ones posted in our the "T" and the lower "TOYOTA".

I'm considering doing the tint on mine but my centercaps need a bit of attention first.

K - for future reference the 97 badges are NOT riveted in. The front grill emblem is held in place by one screw. The badges came off very nicely with the fishing line.
Im considering getting the emblems chrome dipped or going black.

on 98s the 4Runner on the back has 3 or 4 posts and the "T" symbol on the back has two posts... "T" symbol in the front grille is held in by 1 screw

mine came off pretty easily with googone and a plastic puddy knife

also while your painting the emblems dont forget the antenna ring... its also gold- i forgot about it when i was painting mine and its still gold cause i havent broken out the paints since.

oh and if you go silver, dont use "chrome finish" spray paint because no matter what, it wont make the emblems actually look like CHROME... kinda like a powdery silver or white-ish. even with a clear shine finish-- go get em chrome dipped

if i could go back, i would have done pearl black

Are those the center caps in the middle of the rim? If so, all four on my 4Runner are getting some wierd yellowish color to them. Is there a place to get these new? or aftermarket?

They're not turning yellow,it's the paint coming off from being sandblasted by road dust.

They are very easy to paint but give them a good sanding job,then primer,paint them silver then clear coat them for a little more protection and they should be fine for another 4-5 years. I went the extra mile with mine and painted the "T" red. I used acrylic modelers paint and filled in the "T" and then gave it 4 coats of clear and let fully dry for 48 hours before reinstalling on the wheels.

I've decided to paint my emblems myself...As close to a black pearl will do fine. Im just wondering how to remove the old finish. Anyone?

This is the truck with them gone for now.

Front emblem off. Im going to have the dark gray part of the grill painted body color. Was also thinking about the lower plastic bumper. Has anyone done that?

For future reference, this shows the holes that two of the emblems are aligned in. There are 4 small holes in the dark gray area. Im going to have that painted aswell - either body color or silver like the fender flares. Im getting the hatch repainted due the starting of rust around the wiper.

I was going to have my rims refinished, but with the cost and bother I figured Im better off buying something aftermarket for like 4 bills.
And the last item on my list is a 2-2.5 inch lift.

Thanks again for your post. I painted all 4 center caps yesterday and they look sweet. I masked off the outer circle though, on all 4 the outer ring was just fine, then I sand blasted the rest of the paint off, a coat of primer, 3 coats of "close enough" silver, 3 coats of clear coat, man it looks factory original again. BUT I wasn't as ambitious as you are and did not fill in the "T", but I'm just fine with it all silver, as long as the yellow is gone.

you're lucky that the paint didn't oxidize around your emblems like mine did

anyways it will look good, I didn't do pearl black, just a gloss black on my forrest green 99, I still think it looks great
