Getting the drive shaft TSB covered from Toyota

After hearing that Toyota FINALLY issued a TSB (TSB-0121-12) a couple of months ago for the V8 4Runner drive shaft assembly, I'm bringing my 4Runner to the dealership this week to have the drive shaft assembly replaced. I brought it in last week so they could document my complaint and run it up the flag pole with Toyota's regional service manager. I received a call back on Friday stating that Toyota has decided to cover it.

Luckily for me, I took my 4Runner in with just 1,100 miles to have them document the problem right after I bought it even though I knew there was not a permanent fix at that point. Looking back, I'm glad I did. The TSB is only covered under the 60 month, 60k mile Toyota drive train warranty. Since I complained about the clunk while I was still covered under my factory warranty and the TSB just came out, Toyota is making an exception for me and will cover the expense. I still think it is a little shady of Toyota to issue the TSB for the Lexus GX470 several years ago with the exact same components and documented problems, but are just now issuing that TSB for the 4Runners. A vast majority of the '03-'09 V8 4Runners are now out of warranty and I think that Toyota did that by design. Not cool in my opinion but at least they are covering it for me. I would urge anyone who has had issues with the infamous drive line clunk to contact your dealer and/or Toyota to see if they will cover it for you.

I have been lubing my drive shaft with Mobil 1 synthetic grease at every 5k mile oil change since I bought my 4Runner, so I'm not expecting to see a huge improvement with the new drive shaft assembly. I would start to notice the clunk come back just before each oil change, so I've been able to time the service on the drive shaft fairly well. The true test will be letting it go a little longer without servicing it to see if the TSB truly fixed the problem. I'll post back later this week after I have the service done and again in a few months to see how it is doing in the long run.

Wish I was covered. I bought my 4Runner in January CPO'd from a Toyota dealership and noticed the problem right away. Too bad it's at 74k miles... :cry2:

CPO should have a full warranty for 1 year / 12k miles. Then the drive train is 7 year/100k miles.

I've lubed mine and it still clunks. Probably clunks worse than when I didn't grease it. But I'm too far passed warranty even with my friend being a service manager.

If you are experiencing the clunk even after lubing it, I would still suggest getting the TSB done, even if you have to pay out of pocket. I remember seeing a member here who had the Lexus GX470 TSB (basically the same exact thing) done at his Toyota dealer for around $200. The TSB only consists of one part, the drive shaft assembly, and 0.6 hours of labor.

It it were a safety issue or something that would prematurely wear, i would be all over it, but since I have lived with it this long I don't even notice it. Based off my experience with the exhaust odor and running right in to get it swaped, but still the odor is unchanged, I have even less motivation for a clunk. My view is if it is working, leave it alone.

I don't believe the V6's are covered at this point for whatever reason. I'd probably just live with the problem too had Toyota not decided to cover it. It wasn't that much of a pain to lube the driveshaft when I changed the oil, but it is just one step I would like to avoid especially with winter around the corner here in CO.

I had the TSB performed on my 4Runner and everything is good to go. I drove it quite a bit yesterday and the new drive shaft is smooth with no signs of the clunk. As I mentioned earlier, the true test will be to let it go for a while without greasing to see if the clunk comes back or not. The service rep said that I should still grease the drive shaft every 20k-30k miles or so. I'll post back after a few months again with an update.

I just had mine done as well. Took some serious *****ing and moaning to the dealer, but they covered it under my 2month/3000 mile warranty. They wanted me to pay half initially. HA! :flipoff:

Lot of driving coming up this month, so time will tell if it is a true fix. Driving home from the dealer, all of the places where I would get a little bit of a clunk I drove away from smooth as silk.

Fingers crossed!

Great news! I was ready to go to battle with Toyota had they not agreed to pay for it. I know TSB's come out all the time after a particular model year is out of warranty, but the fact that Toyota issued the same exact TSB for the GX470 years ago made my blood boil. Makes me glad I brought it in and had it documented at just a month old with 1,100 miles on it. That was over 5 years ago.

Keep us posted on how it drives. I'm hopeful this will resolve the issue. I don't mind greasing the drive shaft zerks every year or two for preventative maintenance, but every 4k-5k miles to keep the clunk away is a bit excessive.

I've done some searching, but I can't find where the site is to see what recalls there are for specific VIN's. I'm not talking about the TSB section on T4R.org, but the actual website. I went on it years ago and just typed in my VIN and it showed the recalls.

Anyone know what it is?
