Gettting a 2nd 4Runner but can't

I must say I love this truck, and my Wife and I are considering getting a second one. One problem, My wife does not want the truck unless I find a solution for those darn cup holders. I can't beleive it comes to this.
I know it has been discussed about the those darn cupholders, has anyone found a good mod for this yet?
The new truck in question would be 2004 4x4 Sport...... Help me get a second truck plz:(

Did your wife ever see those cupholders on the thrid gens? I thought the cupholders were pretty good on the 4th gens. They are even adjustable to fit all cup sizes!!!
 
The cup holders are great for the larger drinks but the thinner cups topple over too easy. I find my self holding the cups as I drive now, I just got used to it but she is coming from a 2002 highlander (which holds the cups nice and snug).
 
If it's a small cup that likes to topple over, stuff some napkins in there to keep it snug. I know it's a workaround and not a fix, but W/E...

I like the cup holder, at least they are in a decent location. On my celica it used to be right in front of the shifter and when it's a manual you end up bumping the cup ALL the time.
 
Only had my 4runner 3 days and now you have me thinking - I wonder if this needs some kind of foam rubber attaching to the little wings - I think 3M do materials like that.
 
I thought about the napkin trick but my wife would not go for that. Kind of funny though the new truck would be for her but yet, I am the excited one about having another in the driveway.

Dave, I like that thought. I think I will head to the hardware store tomorow and look for something like that. Sounds like that should take care of the problem.

By the time I fix this, she might back out of the idea:(. All this because of the 1% percent financing....:D
 
you are aware that there are clips/tabs that pop out to hold smaller cups in place. Have you tried this? You should be be able to pull out the arms and then it'll look like "V" shape when both side is used.

other than that, you might as well tell her to use the cup holder in the door ;)
 
Buy the second 4Runner, and I'll personally send you $5 so you can buy your wife a nice wide-base travel mug. :)

yeah, that's what i figured. since they are adjustable.. i know that they are kindof big, and are usually big for the usual coffee, but they fit fine when they are adjusted. and then there are the doors for bottles, but its a bit of a hassle to reach that low. or you could buy something that will go into the cupholder that will fit smaller cups if you're finding that adjusting them would still make them too big.

Goddtimes, I use those arms as well but depending on the cup (fastfood joint) they don't always hold the cup well. I think I am going to find a strip of plasctic or rubber and glue it down to the arms, this way there is more resistance to the cup.
Maybe I will convince her this week and my truck will have a sibling by next week.:cool:
 
I work at a sign shop, and have access to platform router table. Some day (very soon) I'm going to make an aluminum cover plate which will sit right over the top of the entire cup-holder assembly. The cover plate will be cut from 1/4" aluminum and will have two cup-holes (diameter of a standard pop can) which will hold beverages snuggly, centered over the top of the existing larger cup holders. The plate could be easily lifted out to fit larger mugs or 32 oz drink cups. I'm thinking about either powder-coating the plate black, or giving it a brushed-aluminum finish.

If anybody is interested in this concept, I might be convinced to make several. I havn't determined a fair price yet, however.

This is a good idea. Put something over the cup holder to keep the cups snug, maybe you can pay BLUEWOLF to make you the cover plate he wants to make for his runner.
 
My 93 Toyota pickup has that old "pull-out" cup holder above the stereo. I'm sure the 2nd gen 4Runners have the identical thing (not sure about the 3rd gens or Tacoma pickups though). Anyway, I think that is just about the best damn cup holder ever designed. Pop cans sit snug even on rough roads, coffee mugs with the narrow bottom fit perfectly, regular size fast food cups fit perfectly... even the new plastic 32 oz cups have the narrow bottom and fit great! I've had two of those heavy mega-size drinks in that cup holder PLENTY of times and the extra weight doesn't seem to bother it at all. But the best thing is THE DRINKS DON'T MOVE... what a concept!! When you dont have any drinks, it tucks back into the dash out of sight. Perfection.

Why Toyota decided to change such a great, simple thing I'll never know.
 
It has happened, we now have twins! :awais: I have not yet adjusted my cupholder but that was not enough to stop the coming of a new member to family. I will post pics in the Gallery.
 
What color did you end up getting? Congratulations. At least you didn't let a cupholder stop you from getting such a nice truck!!!
