Gibson 5th Gen exhaust

It says "swept Side Single; Aluminized; Exit Is Straight Out The Back" Sounds confusing. ALso if you click on the install pics, Its the 4G T4R they have it on.

I had a Gibson exhaust on my F150 Supercrew and it was horrible didn't really have much of an exhaust note over stock and didn't fit well at all my rear axle was always hitting the exhaust. I went with a magnaflow muffler in place of stock couldn't be happier. Just my 2cents

Just curious if anyone ever purchased the Gibson exhaust for their 5th Gen and what they think of it. I'm hoping for a good TRD exhaust to come out eventually.

I was under my 4runner and was looking at the exhaust. From what I can see the problem area (in the exhaust) just from a visual inspection is the y pipe with the resonators. Its got the 1983 trans/am y pipe all smashed to sh*t so as not to screw with ground cleareance. The cat backs I've seen are from the y pipe back not the cats (in front of the y pipe) if you can find a true cat back it might actually do some good after seeing the piece of crap they stuck between the muffler and the cat. Replacing what i've seen on the web sites is pointless with the cats and that garbage of a y pipe still in place.

I called TRD to see if they have any exaust mods for the 2010 Toyota 4Runner and he said all they have right now is an exaust tip available. Part #PT932-89100. Be nice when TRD comes out with a complete exaust system though. On a side note, I am getting the TRD Air Intake ordered today.

This is a stainless steel, polished exhaust tip for the Toyota 4-Runner. This model tip has a similar installation to the other tips. Open the clamp and wrap it around the tip and the end of the muffler with the tip 17 millimeters (about .6 inches) from the end of the exhaust pipe. Then tighten the clamp with a wrench. This exhaust tip retails for about $40 in 2010.

That tip looks very similar to the one that comes stock on the TE.

On another note, I noticed the Gibson exhaust above has a side exit. I've also seen other threads regarding side exits (the main purpose being to divert the exhaust smell). Wouldn't adding bends to the exhaust like that add torque (back pressure) and reduce HP? Or am I misunderstanding how the airflow works?

Make sure you know what you are getting with Gibson. I have a Gibson catback dual out on my Dodge Ram but I bought it mostly for the sound of the V8. Not sure I'd care to hear a V6. But, anyway, my truck has stock 20 rims on it and the spare is the same, which is mounted beneath the rear part of the bed. Because of the big donut and not wanting to pay for anything custom, I bought what they call their dual sport side catback. It's a dual output, but both pipes exit in the stock location behind the rear tire on the passenger side. It was listed as a direct fit for my truck and even used the stock exhaust hanger locations. It was a breeze to install myself but I ran into a problem. One of the pipes butts up next to my spare tire. I contacted Gibson and they informed me that they R&D'd that system on a Ram with 17" wheels. Well, 17's are what they come stock with but the vast majority of 1500's I see have the 20" rim option on them. The only solution I could come up with was to wrap the pipes with exhaust wrap. This seemed to have worked okay for a couple of years but I recently discovered that the long term rubbing of the tire against the wrap finally ripped a hole in the wrap and now I have a nice chunk of rubber burned out of my spare tire. I have since rewrapped it but it's a pain to have to worry about it all of the time.

I tell you all of that just to illustrate why you might want to be careful and why the price may be cheaper. Mine was cheaper, mainly because I didn't get stainless steel. Corrosion is not a big issue where I live and the exhaust has held up so far. But my guess is they also don't put as much as they should into R&D. I really like the sound it gives me - not to loud and nice tone, for my taste. But I really wish I had just gone and spent the money on a decent system with dual rear exits. I went with the single side, dual exit because the spare tire was in the way of their dual rear exit system. Well, it's still in the way - and they should have known that and listed it as a footnote or something. If it says 4x2 only, I'm sure there is a reason for it, so don't assume it will fit 4x4 without something being in the way.

Just my experiences...I ran a Gibson exhaust on my Titan for about a year. It was a single side exit with a nice stainless tip. The cost was about half what I paid for a Banks system on my Jeep TJ. Both fit perfectly and sounded great. The more expensive Banks system came with better clamps(nice) and a polished muffler, which I could've cared less about. I guess my point is; yes, you do get what you pay for, but Gibson makes a nice exhaust for the money. I would buy one for my 5th Gen if I didn't like my Magnaflow muffler sooooo much. :)

I had a Gibson side slash on my first truck, It was pre-owned so I did not buy it but on my next new truck I had a mangnaflow on it and hated it, went straight back to the Gibson and it sounded great. My next new truck I went straight for a Gibson, great sound and no droning in the cab. I would give Gibson a 10 out of 10 anytime.
