Gibson Cat Back Exhaust

I've been debating between the Borla and Gibson from Jason B's site, and can't seem to justify paying $900+shipping+installation for the Borla. How is the sound on the Gibsons? How about Performance? Any input would be appreciated.

On V8's the gibsons sound nice. Cant tell ya about performance though. Is it a cat back system?? Single exit?? $900.00 seems steep.

Josh,

I just purchased the Stainless Gibson for my 08 Limited V8 and like it. My main concern was having something that annoyed me in the cab while highway cruising. I have a long commute. That and it had to pass the wife test.

It sounds good on the V8. Nice throaty sound while town cruising and just getting on it. Highway, it is almost like stock. There are some days I wish it was a bit louder, but those days are few and far between. It just enhances the V8 sound already there a bit.

It definitely sounds good. Not obnoxious. My other option was the Maganflow, but too many complaints to risk it. I didn't want to pay for something, install it, only to find it bugged me on my drives home.

As for performance, I don't know really. I had it on a week before adding my Volant (which I love). It is loud when you get on it but kinda growls too. This is what the combo saounds like for the most part. Most of that is the Volant, but the exhaust chimes in just right, too. BTW - Below is not my 4Runner. Just one I found online. Mine sounds the same. It was also this vid that helped me make the decision on my purchase.

4runner - exhaust and intake

Between the 2, I believe I gained some mileage. But with gas what it is now, I baby it and see between 20 -22 mpg every tank. I have a bit of highway in there too.

Great first post, welcome to the board!

Does it bring the Throaty sound down to lower RPMs? Whereas the stock one doesn't kick in with the grunt until about 4,000 RPM, does the Exhaust provide a nice sound at more like 2,000 RPM? How about at idle? Thanks.

Josh,

I haven't driven the Runner since then. I will try to take it out today or tomorrow and pay attention to the things you specifically inquired about. I have to fill up and run errands, so that's as good of an excuse to take it out as any.

Right off,

I can answer your last question.

The exhaust doesn't really sound any different at idle. It is when the engine is under load you hear the exhaust. So as your cruising through town or traffic at lower speeds and lower RPM's, you hear it. When you first start the ignition, it comes to life a little. When you romp on it, it is noticed until it gets wound up high enough in the RPM's to reduce the overall load on the engine. Kind of like accelerating to get on the freeway...you hear the engine up until the point you are at your desired speed and now just cruising.

I will get more details later today.

gibson

I had a gibson cat back on my 02 F150 it was crap it didn't fit right and it wasen't loud at all I had it profesonally installed when I went 4wheeling the exhaust would hit the axle thats how bad it fit. On my 4runner I have a custom Magna flow exhaust they cut the stock muffler off and tucked the magna flow up alittle closer to the body cause my stock muffler was pretty beat up and they also cut the resonater off and put a stainless steel magna flow tip on all for 190.00 dollars anyway that is my 2 cents

Hey Josh,
I'm thinking about just getting the Vortex Cherry Bomb. I had one on my Jeep(4.0), it sounded great, nothing crazy, but a very nice rumble, that i havn't heard from a cat-back.

I'm actually buying a MagnaFlow today from a guy locally. Brand new int he box for $400. So hopefully it sounds good without being over powering. MagnaFlow's are supposed to have less droning than a Gibson, so we'll see.

Josh,

Sorry to get back late, but the exhaust enhances the entire rev range. I hear it from 1000 RPM's on up. I definitely hear it everywhere now that you had me listen to it carefully. When you floor it, it just growls all the way through. I don't see a hit at 4k, but earlier. I think between the Volant and the exhaust it is just "peppier".

Keep us posted on the Magnaflow. As for the drone, everything I have read and also heard from Burtmann, is that the Magnaflow actually drones more.

The Gibson has no drone really. Can't imagine what kind of drone the Maganflow has after having my Gibson on for a little while.

Congrats on the purchase. Enjoy.

On a slight side note:

I have had a few F150's including my last being an 05 5.4 V8 4wd. As far as the engines go, hands down, our V8's sound better all around from the factory. I am talking engine notes. The toyota is absolutely beautiful compared to the F150.

Exhasut notes for a pick up to an SUV may also be different since with a pickup, there is no cab directly over the exhaust. Just a bed. With the 4runners, the entire cab sits over the length of the exhaust. I understand this is where any drone issue from any exhasut happens. It just resonates throughout the cab. I do not experience this with the Gibson.

Another thing I found to skew my exhaust shopping was the input on exhausts on the V6 to V8. There is still a difference. The V8 is definitely different.

I also had a Gibson on my 2000 4.0 TJ and that sounded like crap compared to my Runner. Again, my V6 was just not the same.

Apples to Oranges. May be fruit, but still not the same.

Has a good loud sound especially at the 2,000 RPM range, but it practically disappears at higher RPM's. If I floor it, I can't even hear it. So I think I will have to get an Air Intake, so I have the Exhaust sound at lower RPM's, and the Intake for the higher RPM's. Haven't had it on the freeway yet, but at 60-65 mph on side streets I can't even hear it, even with the radio off. So I doubt it'll be much different on the freeway. The "drone" is slightly noticeable if I keep it at 2,000 rpms. If I am below, or go over, there is no drone. So all I have to do is accelerate a tad faster if I want to get past that part faster, but for now I like it.

I also like how it exits out the side, rather than one big ass chrome pipe out the back.

I am going offroading this Saturday, so I'll have city driving, freeway's, hills, and slow rpm driving (on the trails) all in one day, so that should be the ultimate test of the system.

I actually just test drove a V8 today with the magnaflow on a earlier 4th gen, and around town and stuff i didn't notice any drone, and the sound was pretty nice when you get on it and go from a stop, but the minute I got on the freeway around 60-75 the sound in the cabin was a bit much for me. It's not bad and it's not something I'd mind, but I definitely think it'd raise the volume of conversation exchange between the front and back seat.

I think Gibson sounds like the exhaust for me...if only they did side exit...i don't like the look of dual out the back on the 4-runner.

is the gibson a straight single exhaust? pretty much a stock replacement in terms of fit?

I could have sworn the gibson was a dual system....

Hmm, you have very odd opinions..... It's loudest at 2,000 RPM's so I understand that you think it sounds nice around town. However, on the freeway is where you lost me. It's so quiet on the freeway that my 265/70/17 Nitto's overpower the sound of the exhaust. Which also means that you would only need the radio to be at about 10 to cover it up. Not sure how you think that's over powering......

Also, the Gibson has one giant chrome pipe out the back, not dual. It's straight out the right side, like stock. Just much larger.

i like the sound of when you get on it and around town. when youre at a constant speed or no big load on the engine it is pretty quiet but on the freeway is when the sound was a permanent buzz from the exhaust. the constant hum was pretty obnoxious for me.

i guess im just not into loud exhausts...i like a stock sound/noise level unless im flooring it.

my previous car i put an exhaust on was a nissan 350Z. I upgraded to a Stainless Steel Cat back from Stillen and it was great. when cruising on the high way it was just as quiet, if not quieter than stock, and when i get on the throttle, had a real sweet sound that was on par with stock loudness but with a better tone.

At least for the V8 version, I think the tubing is the same size from what I could tell. The Gibson exhaust tip is actually much larger. The factory Stainless Steel Exhaust Tip will fit on the Gibson with no issues...if you want to keep the look of the factory system with the sound of the aftermarket.

Just a tidbit for those that may have been wondering.

thats exactly what i'd like to do, keep the stock look with just a small bit of a sound increase (which is my understanding of what the Gibson exhaust is like)

just ordered the Gibson stainless steel exhaust from burtmanindustries today! Hopefully it'll come to my door soon...I'm going to have a muffler shop try to bend it into a side exit exhaust.

i wonder if it would be too hard to fabricate a dual exit for the exhaust...get the borla look?

or maybe a dual end portion to create a dual side exit look behind the tire on the passenger side

Any decent muffler shop will be able to easily convert the gibson to a side exit and it shouldn't cost very much. That's what I'm planning to do eventually with the gibson in my garage.
