Gibson Catback with Volant CAI on V8?

Been thinking about a Gibson/Volant combo based on the positive comments on both systems. What I'd like to know is if anyone's used both of these systems. I've got a 2007 V8 Sport Edition and I'm looking to see if I can bump up the gas mileage a little bit, something a few people have said actually happened.

I'm not really looking for recommendations but my criteria for the exhaust at least is something that doesn't affect the sound level much (I refuse to touch a FlowMaster system) but delivers at least some performance, something to complement the CAI system. Borla was my other candidate but I didn't like the side-swept end.

Thoughts? Comments? I'm all ears.

Volant is pretty neat. I know my buddies cummins loves his volant with the powercore filter. I was trying to get a volant but they dont make a CAI for the 1GR 4runners. on the exhaust side there are many brands to choose from. Magnaflow seems good, but I really like the Aero turbine mufflers myself (I dont like flowmaster either). basically any strait though muffler will give you the most efficiency. maybe to round up all these mods to make sure they work together you should try a URD MAF calibrator.

Went to the dragstrip 2 weeks ago, with K&N CAI and gibson cat back i ran 15.5 with stock tires. +1-2 MPG on highway for sure.

Only 15.5 mpg? What speed were you going? I get normally about 19-21 highway (55-70mph) up here in CT.

I *think* man03999 meant 15.5 seconds for the quarter mile, not mpg. He meant on the highway he got 1 to 2 mpg higher (going home?). That seems to be .2 seconds faster than the 2005. Car and Driver rated the 05' v8 at 15.7 here...---"Toyota, Triumph, Volkswagen, Volvo" 0-60 and 1/4 mile times for Factory Stock Vehicles

Sorry for the confusion, 15.5seconds for 1/4mile R/T .558 And in general I get about 1 to 2 mpg higher with my stock tires ( 22mpg highway) and with my 255/75/17 i get about 19-20mpg highway (i guessing the 1/4mile time with my 255/75/17 will be somewhere around 16.5seconds. My friends stock 4runner beat me in a race by about half of car length when the 255/75/17 tires are on with my CAI and gibson cat back.

15.7seconds are for the v8 , i have the newer vvti v6.

Yep, whether it be high school or college, you ALWAYS get docked a point or two for forgetting units.

Sounds like the Volant CAI along with the Gibson cat-back is worth it. Unless someone's got a story to convince me otherwise I think this is what I'll be getting once finals are over in a few weeks.

if u get the volant, get the powercore filter, u can also mod it & completly seal it off so it is a true CAI

Go to the plumbing section in home depot and get a 3" dia pipe cap. Seals it off near perfectly.

I have the Volant with the Gibson on my 07 V8. I'm glad to have them both. I'm running 285 LT's so the added weight of the tires kills my mileage and the extra tire height throws off the odometer so the 4runner doesn 't give my real mpg (but then it never has). With that being said, by my calculations I'm averaging around 17 mpg with 285 LT's and a 3" lift.

you can also seal it off better around the tube & plumb it out the fender.

I have that exact setup with my 03 v8 4x4 limited, volant air intake and gibson exhaust from burtman industries. I don't watch my mpg so can't comment on that. I don't get what the big deal is about closing up that hole on the air box. I know there's long threads about it but that one of the first thing all Tacoma owners do, is cut a hole in the airbox and put in a deckplate so it can be water tight closed if needed, google tacoma deck plate mod.

closing the hole is of couse not nesessary, & letting more air in increases throttle response, but if it lets warm air in from the engine bay its not exactly a CAI, thats why some close it off, our stock boxes are already a cai. also, with aftermarket cai & some exhausts, depending on which u get, u may gain throttle response at high end, but lose some at low end. i know i did with the volant/borla combo until i closed off the box. it may be different with the gibson/volant setup, its just something you can do if ya feel its needed. either way, id still suggest the powercore filter, it lines up with the box opening & draws more of the colder air from the fender.

That's why I run just a K&N drop-in -- no weird humming/honking/droning, no extra effort/reverse engineering and it's cheap. The extra few torque/horsepower points from a complete kit isn't worth it (IMHO).
