Glock questions

I was wondering what everyone thinks of the gen 3 and the gen 4 glocks?

I have shot the gen 3 glock 19, 22, 23 and the 34..however, I haven't tried an gen 4 yet..

I though about an xd or m&p but with the xd, it middle fingers doesnt fit so well around the trigger guard..

any pros of going with the gen 3 over the gen 4? and vice versa for the gen 4 over gen 3?

the one I'm looking at is an glock 17.. I would go with an compact but my hands are a little too big for the 19...

I will be the first to say I was a Glock hater. Could not stand the idea of all plastic gun for the most part. After working for a Agency that only allowed Glock 19's I became a fan quick. It shoots well with good ammo and a KKM Precision Barrel dropped in. Add a first gen Glock mag that holds 30 rounds while working as a driver. It is a nice little gun. That and being able to hide it was nice also. In the end find something that works for you and you feel good with. Some guys hate Glock triggers, other guys only want to shoot single action guns. Try as many as you can bud and find the combo that YOU like.

Either Generation will be a fine weapon. The only real changes between either is the different (or new for the gen 4) texture pattern. The gen 4 comes with 3 back strap inserts and a dual recoil spring (do a google search for pros and cons).

But the best advice, which was other last post too, is to just pick up every weapon you can and operate all of the controls (just make sure to ask the clerk before dry firing pistols). And don't be afraid to ask to have the clerk replace the back strap inserts on weapons that have them, might make an awkward weapon feel amazing.

Some of the 4th gen 9mm Glocks have had problems with the extractors and BTF.

I use a Gen 3 (altho with that line there's not a real G3 since it has features of other Gen 4s made at the time) G30 full-size as my EDC. It's accurate at 15 yards and will eat any ammo you feed it.

Like others have posted, try many different types/brands. If you have already done that and have narrowed it down to the 3rd or 4th gen, I vote for the 3rd gen. Personally, I do not like the new frame texture of the 4th gen. Also, I know there have been some minor issues with them. I use two G22's and one G27, all 3rd gens. Between those three guns, I have probably shot over 100,000 rounds. I can honestly say I have had less than 50 malfunctions over the ten years I have been shooting them. Glock is a reliable, accurate, easy to use battle weapon. May not be the nicest looking or have the best trigger, but it is basically guaranteed to go "bang" when you pull the trigger. Also, if you want a little extra "grip" on a 3rd gen, the fix I use is to wrap a little tennis racket tape around it. Does not add much bulk, and gives a nice, secure feeling. Good luck.

I don't have experience with the 4th gen but I've shot a 3rd gen 17 and used to own a 3rd gen 27. Both were very reliable and reasonably accurate. If I had to do it over I would probably stick with the 9mm and get the 26. The 40 was a bit too jumpy in the compact. There are tons of reasonable upgrades for any glock so if you don't like the trigger to want a better barrel, those are pretty strait forward.

I think the issue you may find is availability. For that reason, and for price, I would also recommend the M&P. Keep an eye on gunsamerica or gunbroker and you can get some awesome deals. You can sometimes find the LE model for the same price and it includes an extra mag. I'd say they directly compete and my S&Ws have been great guns throughout the years. Yes they seem to rip off some ideas from glock (and vice versa) but in the end you still get a great product and newer innovations.

Either way the new back straps are pretty neat, especially if you have larger hands. The new grip texture is good too as I haven't felt the need to add a grip or tape like with other polymers.

The only problem I've ever read about the 4th gens is this, which you'll only have to worry about it you buy a used pistol; new pistols are obviously fixed from the factory.

I love my glocks. With my first Gen3 19 9mm I shot thousands of rounds of GARBAGE ammo without a single malfunction. I now have 2 of those. I find them both to be very accurate.

With my gen4 22 40 Same story, only I don't have 2. A little less accurate than my 19's.

With my 36 45... I haven't touched it yet, but I am VERY excited for it.

If the 19 is too small, try out a 22. It feels very good in my hands, and my father, who has some freaking bear paws, says it's also very comfortable to shoot. He bought one after shooting mine.

All my of glocks have the 99 cent trigger job (check youtube).

I have shot the XD's, don't really care for them. I also think they look tacky.

The M&P's I have LITTLE experience... I didn't care for the one I shot though. 1 mag was enough.

No matter how fast I pulled the trigger on the M&P I would get beat by Glock shooter. The trigger reset is horrid on the M&P and forever long and just is mush(Glock trigger reset is half that of the M&P). Because it is a strike fire system there is little you can do to it also. I sold it after academy and have not missed it at all. On the positive side, it looks good. MIO take it for what it is worth, you my love it.

This is how we built our Golcks by the way. I will not say what company did this for R&D but it was a blast! After Milling them down and working everything this was the end result.

I'm still getting used to the MP357C. The trigger still feels a bit gritty but the reset wasn't a problem and out-of-the-box accuracy was pretty good. I can't wait until I get more time to put some ammo through it.

Don't get me wrong - I do miss my little Glock, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well the MP did when I got it. Hopefully once things calm down I can pick up a couple of Glocks as well.

I never said the 22 wasn't a .40 caliber. I obviously, wasn't clear enough, or your reading comprehension is poor. Either way, the OP stated he was looking for a Glock 17, or the full framed 9mm (without compensation and the non-competition model). For what it's worth, I'm honesty not sure if your being a smart-ass or actually agreeing with me... and since I'm bored; I'll keep typing.

The only difference, with regards to dimensions, between a Gen 3 17 and a Gen 3 22 is... well nothing.

The difference between a Gen4 17 and a Gen 4 22, nothing again.

The difference between a Gen 3 (17 or 22) and a Gen 4 (17 or 22) is +/- 2mm of OAL, or overall length. Hell, the weights of each firearm are so marginally different that I doubt you could even tell the difference.

So, if you're curious as to why I originally felt the need to correct you; it's not because I'm a perfectionist. It's because to many people find the way Glock numbers their models with relation to caliber and frame size is confusing to anyone but enthusiasts.

For instance, the 9mm line has: full frame = 17, compact = 19, sub compact = 26... Change that to .40 and we have 22, 23, 27 respectively. Add .45, 10mm, .357, .45 GAP, compensated, etc and a novice reading your post (while already being confused with the model numbers) can easily walk out with the wrong pistol, all while not knowing any better.

It's not rocket science, but with all the first time buyers out there, it's easy for someone to make a life-threatening mistake.

Back to the OP, I've always heard Glock referred to as the "Toyota of guns." I've had my eye on a Glock 19 Gen 4 for a while now, but I've never actually shot the thing. I held one in my hand for the first time the other day and even though I have slightly large hands, it still felt pretty comfortable. Ideally, I just wanted an extremely reliable gun that is fun to shoot and could be CC'ed. G19 seemed to fit that roll rather nicely based on many, many reviews. But I definitely won't be buying one until I rent one at a local range and squeeze the trigger a few times. The primary reason I haven't bought one yet is due to this freaking ammo shortage, but things are already getting better in this area. Although I haven't seen a box of .22 since last year...
