Manager: GE Transportation, diesel electric locomotives. Locomotives are fun to drive.
Supervisor: Caterpillar responsible for the engines/alternator units in the largest electric vehicles I’m aware of, 790 series electric drive dump trucks, as well as other engine/alternate units.

Consider this:
From around 1790 until 1880 gas lighting technology was a mature reliable industry with a big infrastructure and manufacturing operations. It worked well enough and everybody was comfortable with it. Then along came Thomas Edison with AC power distribution and a workable incandescent light bulb. Lots of resistance (lol) and fear of electrification at first but the rest is history. How many people use gas lighting in their homes today?

EVs are coming, like it or not. They definitely appeal to me for a lot of reasons- MPG, torque, potential reliability of the electric motors. Plus, Teslas are damn fun to drive- that instant torque is addicting!

If EV technology was suitable to replace ICE vehicles, there wouldn't need to be subsidies for buying them. The masses would see their value and buy them without being bribed.
For me, you'll never convince me to abandon ICE vehicles to limit my freedom of movement to that of finding a charger and dedicating time to sit there and wait for it. maybe as nothing more than a commuter, but cross country travel in them is silly

Lots of folks drive cross country. My neighbor drove to Georgia and back from denver for the masters a few years back. He was very pleased at the quality of planning and the great charging stations/ restaurants / hotels Tesla provides plus he loved the fact that he didn't have to stop at seedy gas stations.

Yeah, true. But people are greedy. Individuals rarely do things on their own that benefit others or society at large. It’s just human nature. So governments apply carrot or stick techniques to get results. Tax breaks for companies to create jobs. Fines for speeding or not buckling your seat belt. Tax deductions for charitable donations. Tariffs on foreign goods. Subsidies for solar panels. Subsidies for EV. Etc, etc. Once costs come down on EVs there likely will be a big demand and no need for subsidies.

While I do agree that eVs will gain a greater share of the market over the next 20 years, I think there will still be a place for gas engines.
A few other points - last I read the best thing you can for the environment is keep an old vehicle. An enormous amount of energy goes into producing a new vehicle, something that last I saw a report on break even you still won’t make up for with an ev vehicle. Now if you need a new vehicle bets are off, but simply trading in to save the environment doesn’t work
I’d also point out that this is all very risky until gm, Honda, Toyota, Ford have reliable vehicles
Elon musk is somewhere between eccentric and nut and it’s tough to have complete faith that Tesla will be around for the long haul. Add in that’s already difficult to get your Tesla serviced if there’s an issue ( multipl people we know have been without their vehicle for a few months at a time), if Tesla ever goes out of business those vehicles will be worthless bc you can’t service them.
There’s also this report - now I don’t always trust cnn, but this is verified by Tesla’s own leadership - their current value comes from buying credits, not selling cars

Electric cars are clearly the future. With all the R&D focused there, they will make them so good that people will want them over ICE vehicles. Just like everyone wants LED lights now - it didn't start out that way! I'm sure that my 2020 will be the last ICE vehicle that I buy.
What I am concerned about is what happens to all the rural residents in the big Western states. They need a big truck that goes a long distance for the way they work. If gas prices go too high there will be trouble. The country needs to get these people on board with something like the old rural electrification project.

Just an anecdote but on my previous model 3, when we needed service we requested it through the app and they came the next day and completed the service in our apartment's parking lot. And that was the only service we needed for the car for a year and a half.
