The Janesville Wisconsin GM plant (thats been there forever) was going to close in 2010 due to declining new SUV sales and full size truck sales which are both made there.

They told employee's today that they will now be closing on Dec. 23rd 08. Merry Christmas !!! I know business is business , but I feel bad for the employees there. LOTS & LOTS of jobs lost .

It is so sad for individuals and it's a very sad commentary about greed and stupidity.

For years contracts built in ridiculous

What sucks about that is the workers (not just union, but lower/middle level salary) will take the brunt due to management effing up during the 90's and early part of this century.
As a side note, I saw a show about some younger Silicon valley execs. pushing to beat Detroit to the electric car. They are younger and very ambitious. Then they show the guy at GM in charge of the Volt project. Some old codger who knows everything and isn't afraid of those guys in California. Old school board room with this guy, I'm sure.
Good luck to GM and the rest of the big 3, but I think they will be next on our socialist bailouts (privitize the profits, socialize the losses).

And how about the GM talking to Chrysler for a merger? I read earlier that GM talked to Ford FIRST for a merger but was declined.
