Gmail...and 3rd party READING your emails!

I think it's a good habit to assume someone or something is reading/looking at anything you do on the internet. Or storing/cataloging it in some way.

I'm using a VPN and it comes with the option of seeing who is trying to track you and in what way. The worst offender? T4R.org.

Yeah I use VPN too. I use Disconnect. You?

Tracking is one thing...reading your personal email is another...and letting THIRD PARTY reading is just absurd!

For sure. But I'd say it's also who you're allowing to access your gmail account information as well as gmail itself. It's why I use three different emails. One for personal only, one work only and the last is for website signups and such.

I'm using Freedome. I like it but am actually looking at changing once my current subscription runs out. It blocks some websites that I'd like to use and doesn't have the option of allowing them manually. Craigslist is the main one. I don't use it all that much, but it still would be nice to not have to shut off my VPN every time I want to look or browse it.

Same here. I have one that i use to sign into on junk/unimportant sites (Yahoo), one for general use (Gmail), and one for personal use (iCloud).

There was a recent article somewhere that VPNs, especially the FREE ones, are not that secure nor private. This is why i use Disconnect...it has been vetted by many (e.g. Time magazine etc.). Disconnect has two mode...one to block trackers and really bad sites...and another mode that runs full VPN (you choose location).

And in blocking mode, i can visit CRAIGSLIST. But i cannot visit in full VPN mode. FYI.

And with Disconnect, i paid a ONE time lifetime fee for use without annual fees.

The biggest complaint of Freedome is how much it nukes my internet speeds. I'm leaning towards NordVPN.

No need to panic. Data is only shared with the third party if permission is explicitly granted by the user, not unlike when you install an Android app and it says "Flashlight Supreme needs access to: Contacts, Location, Camera, Filesystem, blah blah".

But i am sure that people just click YES to everything. The problem i think is that it is COMMON PRACTICE for these 3rd parties to actually read your emails (actual humans reading them) and NO ONE is monitoring them. Google has no official policy to manage what these 3rd parties can see...aka no oversight over these 3rd parties!!

Some quotes from other articles that highlights this problem:

For those of us who are conscious of what we do and don't choose to share, it's very clear that the answer should be "no". For the rest.... caveat emptor.
 
So who do we complain to when you get an e-mail to your GMail and Google reads it and automagically creates a calendar entry for you?

Seriously.

A few weeks ago, I bought tickets to the Solo Movie (decent) online, and had the receipt e-mailed to me.
In the time leading up to the movie, I got an alert for a calendar entry. I checked it, and Google had entered it into my calendar without my involvement. And not just entered something simple (movie at 11am, or similar), but a full fledged entry. The full name of the movie, with the full name of the theater, with a link to the theater's website, a link to the movie on IMDB, a hyperlink to click on to open the theater's location in Google Maps, a hyperlink phone number for one touch dialing, etc.

Right after the movie (timed very perfectly), the calendar entry updated with a link to review the movie on IMDB.

All because I had a receipt e-mailed to me.

That’s great! I actually prefer if all that was done locally on device (via AI on device)...no reason for the need to send that to the cloud. (I think that Apple is going that route.).

But if it must go to Google server/AI, then yeah OK. I semi-trust Google to do the right thing most of the time.

But that is not what this thread is about. This is Google ALLOWING full access to your email and its content to THIRD PARTIES withOUT oversight from Google. This is why i do not trust Google all the time.
 
think about it... google does not charge for its products, how do you think they make their money? targeted advertising...

they give away office products, operating systems, cloud services all for free? nope they steal your info and sell it.

There is no privacy anymore. The "tele-screen" from 1984 is real.

Private corporations and the NSA have quintillions of bytes of data on anything and everything you could imagine.

Now, processing all of that data is another matter. But it matters not. If there is a reason to process your data, it's all there and can be used in many ways, none of them very savory.

The technology that's out there is troubling. If you have enough money and the desire, you can pretty much do anything you want to anyone you want.

I'm not going to go down the rabbit hole, but NOTHING is off limits anymore except your internal thoughts, for a short while longer at least, already have computers that can interpret brain waves/thoughts- but not on a scale that is useable without implantation of electrodes into the brain.

Soon enough implanted electrodes won't be necessary. The combining of technologies will eventually allow for devices that can read thoughts, wirelessly- in real time.

Science Fiction has become Science Horror/reality.

Google is pure evil, by the way.

Internal thoughts being private? Heck, most of the time, those thoughts are on Facebook! That’s why i have stock in FB! :D

Been very happy with them and the price is amazing, speed is not bad (2-2.5MB/sec down on my connection). IVPN is a killer VPN I used for years and much faster (no logs, Crypto accepted, 5,9 & 14 eyes-free also), etc. Fully featured and fast but pricey comparatively, based in Malta I believe.

PIA is waht I have used for years no logs, and when demanded they start taking logs they just shut down operation in that country. It is like 3$/mo and I don't notice any reduced speeds.

also google is the shittiest company to ever exist, I still use many google services but I am trying to move away from their search engine to duckduckgo
