No need to wrap struts

For everyone with the ladder, did anyone swap out the shocks for the rear gate? If so, what did you use?

So far the struts work fine with the ladder. When they start to have issues holding the hatch open I will look for some heavier duty struts.


I received the replacement for my Gobi (the powder coat was bad on the original) and hopefully will be installing it this weekend. I have not opened the box yet to see if I got my free accessory that they promised (I picked the high lift holder) but if not I will let them know.

Call and ask for Sandra. If you don't get a hold of her... call again. They seem to be swamped so emails are getting lost in the pile. When you talk to her, things seem to happen (at least it did for me).

So I ordered the Rack and Ladder a few weeks back and I'm hoping to get it before Labor Day weekend so I can take a trip.

2 Questions:

1. anyone tried putting a bike rack on the Gobi Ladder? I know they have ladder bike racks for RVs and stuff. They even have bike racks that hold the bikes vertically since I the ladders are mounted to the side, and the bikes might stick out to far horizontally.

I tow a lot and was looking for bike storage options that didn't take up the hitch.

2. Has anyone come up with a creative idea to store fishing rods on the Gobi Rack?

I was looking for a fishing rod solution as well, and I've been reading that some people use ski racks to hold their rods. I havent tried it yet, but it seems to make sense to me. Thule use to make a fishing specific carrier, but they've discontinued it several years back.

I will be quite surprised if you get it by Labor day but maybe now that the group buy is complete maybe they will be a little faster.

I would be very careful in using the ladder for hanging bikes as the ladder is built for weight straight down with no torque to try to bend in other direction.

I have a rack for my motorcycle made by VersaHaul that has a tow hitch on it. Not sure what the tow rating is because I use it to attach a bike rack and I also do not know if they have bike racks but it may be worth looking into.

Nothing creative here. I simply have my rods in the case and strap them on the higher bars using tie down straps (bungies would also work). It is not theft proof but I have had no issue on 2 trips so far using this method. If you are worried about thieves you can make a rod case out of PVC with a locking hasp and u-bolt it to the rack. This would at least require more than a knife to steal (my current method a knife could cut my tie down strap in a second and the case with rods and reels would be gone).

It has only a 4K lb limit (versus 5K of vehicle). Maybe you can find one that will even provide 5k lb limit.

What I like about this option is that even without using it to tow it can be used to raise an accessory. I bent a very nice and sturdy bike rack this weekend (one of the sturdiest out there - 2" square steel through the entire rack) this weekend on a 4x4 road (the steel is not strong compared to a car slamming it into the ground). So I may but one.

ANTMAN, you're my inspiration. Unfortunately, I feel like I'm too short to put my bikes up on the roof with your set-up, but I guess that's what the ladder is for. Thanks!
