I’ve got a Rhino Rack done awning mounted on the rear. The awning is out of production now but Gobi still sell the brackets.

I wrap the straps around the tube a couple of times then fix the hook back onto the strap. Worked for me the times I’ve had to move stuff.

ok, but seriously - the Gobi looks cool and is TOP quality welds, but in actual practice is a PITA to mount stuff too. IMO, as I do own one. Fitting your hand underneath the mesh is very hard to mount things and you need to be very patient with a socket wrench (and a towel to protect your paint while you squeeze under it). In comparison, the frontrunner mounting is so easy (after trying it) if i were to do it again I would invest there. 100%! The mounting system they have is so easy its like cheating and instantly adjustable.

Anywho, this is about the Gobi:

To mount to the mesh, buy a lot of 1-1.5 inch washers. ;-) I have two rotopax mounted using their lockable mounts of course and a lot of washers (8 in total - 1 for each screw) to mount them to the mesh.

For my frontrunner wolfpacks, I use their "Stratchets", which are AWESOME and totally replaced my unwieldy standard cargo straps and bought the frontrunner eyeloops. You dont need the frontrunner eyeloops but for $12 bucks it was an easy order.

I mounted the eyeloop tiedowns using a 1.5 inch (#M8 hole size) to mount them securely to the Gobi:

I do not mount things to the side tube of the Gobi because i think it is trendy and dumb. What is the point of having a roof rack if you have maxtraxx and shovels and crap mounted to the SIDE of it. (Although I can buy the excuse of quick access for the shovel). Still, it just seems silly to me.

For the shovel, I see many using Quickfists. Easy peasy but you still have to mount the darn things.

Speaking of shovels, if you have the money and want cool points, Agency 6 make a great one WITH a mount that will clamp to your Gobi. They are super cool guys, so call them to check the tube diameter. You might need to get some inner rubber rings as the Gobi is 1" and this mount is bigger (call them to confirm).

Again, that is for pure cool point, because the price on that ($190) is um...to be desired for something that digs a hole and you can get a great one for $20. (I went with a Rhino USA Folding Survival Shovel w/Pick).

Finally, just another point on the usability for the folks who are trying to make the decision, as I literally was dealing with this issue today - as I just bought a new thing to mount, and now must adjust the rotopax mounts on one side. With the gobi, this will be a 15-20 minute coordinated process. For the frontrunner it is seconds.

Front runner certainly is easy. But no way I was drilling holes in the roof of my brand new rig. Plus by the spec sheets the front runner weights more. I went with Gobi for versatility. I can use it as a box type rack in the winter with no tent on. I can remove the sunroof section. I mount skis and snowboards on it in the winter. I can mount a roof top tent on it. Yes it’s a pain compared to the front runner.

I went with the no rise stealth option.

But like I said no way I’m drilling holes in the roof and putting rivnuts in. If Frontrunner made a no drill option I would have gone with that. Plus with nothing on the roof I think the Gobi wind with style points hands down.

Plus the ladder is great for accessing the roof.

I have not seen much in the way of alternatives to the Gobi delta hooks, and was considering making some. Another off-road website states that they are 3/8 steel rod with a plastic coating. I’m pretty sure I could make some out of stainless rod using a torch and vise. I do not have a rod bending tool, though. Just wondering if anyone has tried it or has a decent alternative.
$35/pair is just a bit more than I want to pay and I’ve constructed alternative gear myself and saved some money but I’ve also had some fails, lol.

If I were designing a roof rack (and wouldn’t get sued by Gobi if I decided to sell it), I would make it identical to Gobi, but build with aluminum and incorporate slots in the crossmembers for eyebolt tiedowns. I suppose the flooring would have to be thicker in order to be traversible.

Yeah, I debated long and hard about the aluminum rack vs. the Gobi before I went with Gobi. Generally, I’m a form follows function guy, but I just liked the look of the round steel tubing on the Gobi and the traversible mesh floor.
If I were designing a roof rack (and wouldn’t get sued by Gobi if I decided to sell it), I would make it identical to Gobi, but build with aluminum and incorporate slots in the crossmembers for eyebolt tiedowns. I suppose the flooring would have to be thicker in order to be traversible.

The mesh floor was probably the largest factor in choosing the Gobi - incredible utility and the kids LOVE getting up there when unloaded. Just throw a Mexican blanket up there and snacks via underhand toss and life is easy.

Yup. My kids love hanging out on the roof when we camp. It's also great for taking photos when you're at a busy place like a national park. You can get above the traffic.

I used a power tank Mount from my old Jeep that I opened up a bit to hold my ignik propane tank. I used axia alloys bar clamps to attach and believe I had to drill a hole in the tank bracket. I secure the tank with voile straps. Works perfectly

Hoping to get a solid single-source thread on roof rack accessories, best ideas, best practices, etc. I searched a bit but no luck so here we are. Doesn’t have to be GOBI specific though I’m sure mounting hardware won’t be universal.

Sure lights, but which ones and why? Wiring tips?

Shovel / hi-lift mounts? Of course, but for less than the classic $175?

Best full-coverage awnings for a full rack?

Ladder mounts - flag carriers? Radio antennas?

I know there are a lot of folks who - through trial and error - have some solid wisdom to share.

You may want to check out our Carrier Deck that just came out in 2022. Holds traction boards, RotoPax, Hi Lift (with their brackets) and you can use the Quick Grip on the sides for axes and shovels. There are more pictures and details on the website. We are working on mounting brackets for tubular racks, OEM cross bars and extruded aluminum cross bar racks at this time.

For Traction Board mounts, I use and love the Yakima Traction Board Mounts. They are held down by straps that can be accessed quickly cinch down tightly. Love them.

For Awning mounts I use GZilla Designs. These things are stout and look great on the Gobi. Highly recommend these. They make mounts for a variety of items.
