It will keep up and down shifting, running at slightly higher RPM's will do far less damage than constantly shifting.

The big thing is that the stress that towing puts on o/d (4th gear) will create a pulling sort of motion on the truck. But o/d will attempt to pull the extra weight even tho it is really not physically a strong enough gear so it will wear. Where as third gear is built for heavier loads and can withstand the pull that extra weight delivers.

the hitch ball is rated for 3500lbs. Is that going to be sufficient? Or should i get a 5000lb ball?

You should be fine, I wouldn't hesitate. I briefly checked out the Duck Mts. and it looks like a sweet spot. Have fun!!

Oh and btw....doesn't having a generator while camping defeat the purpose? The closest thing I've ever brought was a flashlight with batteries and a walkman/radio.

Are you married LOL, j/k!! The only time I need a generator is to power the "surf light's" while shark fishing.

i killed the trans on my tahoe by towing in OD too much. i knew i wasnt suppose to, but i didnt care dumped it before it didnt shift at all though. i was towing a car though, so 5K + lbs and was going a little faster than i should have been as well
