So as I thought the JVC 7000 with Navteq came up strong. If I want clear movies I should go with the Alpine but for GPS and real time traffic JVC puts it money there. Also, this is the only unit with a detachable face plate, when pulled off looks like a black space not attractive. re- installs easily. This unit will warn of upcoming traffic jams using FM frequency and then processes it to provide a warning and alternative routes in real time. It will play DVD's though the quality is like I said about 2/3 of the Alpine clarity. Maps include Alaska Canada (all Provinces). No voice command which is fine with me. Finally when your hand gets close to the screen it switches off the full screen display and shows all controls so while driving all you see is the map. $1200.00 installed with lifetime warranty.

I just had the Kenwood DNX8120 installed in my ride and I can play movies when I am driving as long as the e-brake is on. I figured out if I just put the e-brake on to the first click the movie will play and at one click the e-brake isnt actually doing anything. I have also read that if you ground your e-brake it will have the same effect.
So far I am very pleased with my Kenwood deck.

Will post the pics when installed having a little trouble finding a date to do it at the shop. I do not have the JBL system. The point of decision was the detachable face plate on this unit. Alpine, Kenwood have superior graphics but the dedicated GPS for Canada and Alaska was a factor. The Navteq traffic so they say is the best thing going........may go down to San Diego through L.A. just to see. will report.....

You know that requires an additional subscription for the traffic right? Garmin nuvi 660/680 does the same thing, has detailed maps of Canada/North America, and I take it with me in my briefcase or a backpack when I leave the car (but I can't watch movies on it)...
It looks like a really nice unit, I look forward to seeing it installed.

if you ground the e-brake i believe your light will always be on for the dash display. instead ground the wire that is going to the e-brake which will trick the unit into thinking the brake is on w/o the brake actually being on. at least it was this one w. my pioneer unit and my brothers unit (i cant remember the brand off top of my head)

yes the traffic service is $60 per year according to the shop. pays for itself if it works one time per year in my mind. It also will cut into a song that I am listening to with updates if it sees trouble ahead and that function can be turned off as well if a driver should want to........

Actually, if you ground the light green wire (e-brake lead from the kenwood deck) your e-brake light on your dash won't even come on. It just tricks the deck to think that the e-brake is engaged. takes about 15 mins.

I suppose if you are in traffic say going to Tahoe a movie would be a nice diversion. Will have to keep a copy of Aliens in the 4Runner for just such an occasion. The Alpine brightness is far superior to the JVC IMO though. The Kenwood and Pioneer are great options. My only concern is with the detachable face plate, after 1000 detach and reattach do the connections work the same. I am confident that they tested that but that is my only concern. Without the face plate (which is about 3/4" thick) the rest of the deck is useless so a thief at least in my non thief thinking will not bother. As well the 4th Gen have the armed on blinking red light which I think to a thief says if you break the glass an alarm will sound. The nicest feature of the JVC to me is the fact that all controls disappear when the GPS is on and reappear when your hand gets about an inch away so that one can make adjustments or enter new information. Nav traffic sounds like a real bonus getting continual feedback from FM stations and then alerting the driver of a problem ahead and offering alternatives automatically via screen.$1,200.00 is a chunk of change but for that feature ( I truly despise traffic jams) I will pay.
