Gold lake group run (May 3rd-5th)

I was planning on leaving at 7:00 in the morning, it's about 1 to 1 1/4 hours from here to Grass Valley though, so if we want to meet up with the others, we wouldn't need to leave until closer to 8:00 AM.

Let me know what how you'd like to handle it either way. I'm good either way.

Gotcha, let me dial this in with my other partners, there's 2 parties in that truck. My other partner moved and I can meet up with him somewhere in between me and you. Neither have a radio. Just me.

2 different trucks, 3 bodies. If bad terrain, I guess I have extra duty getting them in there.

Sounds good. I will have room in my rig too if we need to ferry a couple of people in and out. The riders will need to draw straws on who has to ride in the Kidney buster though.

Having fun and Redwolf, I'll be leaving from Sacramento at the same time you guys are if you want to add another truck to the convoy, we can meet up somewhere and head on up the hill. Im pretty flexible so let me know what works

Hey Sam, not a problem there with a caravan. Still working on the meet up time for us in the SAC area. Just wondering approximate area you live in. I do believe Steve is the closes to our destination.

Cool, thanks, and I live in East Sac off Jst. Just let me now on a time and place to meet up when you figure it out

Ya, I would assume I'm the closest, I'm off Antelope Rd, two exits before Roseville on I-80. There's a Raley's right off the freeway we can meet at to caravan up.

Great, sense I'm the farthest, I can meet up with Sam at the Mcdonalds at Kst and 80. I can grab breakfast there. I still waiting on my other partner to let me know where he moved to.

I plan on topping my tank off at Grass Valley and need to stop on the 49 & 20 for a camp fire permit. I will be staying until Tuesday. We could set it up to meet with Jon that way also if it's ok with you guys. That would mean meet Steve at 8:00 am. Jon at 9:30 Grass Valley.

My buddy scoped out the website today and says there's NO fees OCT-MAY. But it cant hurt to stop in and ask since weredriving right by the Forestry Office.

Does anyone know about the permits/fees for sure? Like camping, fires, large groups, off roading? I tried calling but no answer.

I contacted the Yuba River Ranger District today to discuss the campsites, etc. Here's what I was told:

Fire Permits:
Fire permits are free, we just need to stop into the Forest Rangers office to get one. We should probably get as many as we can. This is also the only restriction we will have camping in the area we are planning to camp.

Camp Sites:
Due to the time of the year, we may not have access to the pit toilets, but I have been told that we can camp at any campground we can reach. We just need to have a fire permit in order to have a fire, and need to restrict our vehicles to within one vehicle length of the road (unless the camp site has in-camp parking).

I don't believe that any of the campsites we are looking at normally have fees associated with them. I believe it is only the "Improved" camp sites (IE: Paved) that have fees associated with them.

Trails:
In looking on the various forestry websites, I was a little concerned because I was still seeing campsites and trails listed as closed. After talking with the Yuba River Ranger Station, it appears we should be good to go.

I was told that the new federal standard is that all OHV trails must be listed on a Motor Vehicle Usage Map, which includes the locations of the trails and any seasonal restrictions. According to this ranger, the Tahoe National Forest (at least in the area we are going) have not finalized their MVUM maps yet, and are not enforcing them, thus we can have access to any trail we can get to given the following kaveats:

  1. We must stay within one vehicle length of the trail at all times.
  2. We must "Tread Lightly" and not damage any of the wildlife in the process of our OHV experience.

These are both givens, but I thought I would pass them along.

The ranger did indicate that she wasn't sure we would make it in very far, but I'm less worried about that.

One weird Nuance is that the main entrance to Gold Lake is actually in the Plumas National Forest jurisdiction. As soon as we get to the far side of the lake, we transition to the Tahoe forest. According to the MVUM from Plumas NF, the Gold Lake trail is open year round, so we should be good there.

The biggest thing we may have to figure out is where we will be camping. I am going to suggest that we shoot to try and get in just past Gold Lake into the Tahoe Forest side, but I'm open to suggestions (especially form you Job, since you have a better idea of what the conditions are there).

In any case, that's the information I have found so far.

I plan to stop at the Yuba River Ranger Station on Friday on our way up (which is right off of Highway 49 on our way up). That way we can all get our own fire permits to ensure we are covered. That will allow us to ask any additional questions we may have as well.

Sounds good, that Mcdonalds is only a few blocks from my house so I'll see you there at 8 and we meet redwolf down the road after that

Got your back

As long as your not in a lake front property at gold lake ( paying area ) there is no fees. Like where we all wanted to go away from civilization, it's free.

Camp fire permits are free also, but, mandatory to have them or you get a fine. Some areas go into fire restrictions and camp stoves only. Another big fine if not observed.

Don't worry Jon, I got your back, I'm stopping to get one. Your job is to make sure we get in deeper where no civilization is at, and drag me in if need be to make this happen. After all that is done, like I said, GOT YOUR BACK, were all going to be having fun.

I was figuring around 7:15 and grab a bit there, leave there at 7:30 and be with Steve at 8:00am. With a short introductions, leave and be up at Grass Valley ( Jon's ) location by 9:30 +/- .

Will this work for Sam, Steve, and Jon.

Honestly, never really had a problem anywhere I have gone, as long as you observe fire safety and guide lines, and restricted areas and time periods. And paid areas are usually paved but not always.

That works for me. I'll see ya nice and early at McDonalds

Sounds good. I'll be at the Raley's off Antelope Road in the back of the parking lot near Wendy's no later than 8:00 AM. That should give us plenty of time to get up to Grass Valley by 9:30.

Jon-
Did you want everyone to be fueled up by 9:30, or will we meet, fuel up, and then head out?

Pretty sure, but still iffy since I'm not the one driving. Just count me as a maybe. I'll call ya Thursday just to make sure and let ya know. If I am able to go, Andrew and I will be cruising up Friday late afternoon. Leaving Chico around 4:00 - 4:30 which should put us in Downieville around 7-8pm.

CB Channel 13 (CB is on the crawler, so we'd turn it on when we arrive in Downieville)
