"Gone too far" with your build?

As with any hobby or project, you can "go too far". If you are only off-road one time per year, then it is probably going too far to lift 6 inches, SAS, and install front and rear winches. I'm not pointing any fingers It IS addicting to have a rig that is just the way you want it, even if it is overkill.

It could be maintenance for me (before I begin "building")... I'm basically exceeding the full value of the vehicle just in parts for maintenance. The truck came with no service history, so I'm replacing steering joints, seals, belts, fluids, etc., etc. Kinda doing everything that I suspect wasn't done in the past 50,000 miles. That could be seen as excessive, rebuilding a vehicle with rust and 266,000 miles.

But YOU guys! You guys have some seriously nice rigs. I want to see where you have gone a little too far, overall or in any one area.

My question is this... On which part of your build have you gone too far?

i just installed some 33" MT on my truck and im thinking about taking them off just because its too loud and i dont feel like i need them. Ive also been thinking about taking my body lift off because i dont need that much lift. i guess im getting old and want to mellow things out..

but on the other hand with my parents 96, i broke the flex plate a month ago. with 320,000 miles on it and needing a TB WP they decided to park it and wait for me to get home until we decide as to what to do with it. (fix, part out or sell)

im not really sure if you can go "too far" if you are building for a certain intent or usage for the vehicle. but i know one guy who has gone too far with lights....

Too old at 25 wtf.

I doubt anyone regrets lifting 6 inches because almost no one has done that. 3" suspension with a 2" body lift would be far above the norm unless they SAS'd their truck.

About those loud 33s I'd say sell them and buy General Grabber AT2 285x75x16 tires. They are very quiet in my opinion. I never hear them and they are pretty good off-road. Also only $650 for a set of 4.

As long as it's cheap, you can never go too far I think. I've seen some nicely done 4Runners where the owner took their time and modded it to how they like it without spending hundreds of dollars.

I'm not into big flashy stuff or going for any sort of "look", I just want a strong engine and a reliable vehicle that will get me anywhere, anytime. That being said, once I'm done with the current projects I want to start messing with the engine. Already have a supercharger, maybe will add methanol injection and later run bigger injectors with a piggyback and run a 2.1" pulley. But unless you look under the hood, there's nothing different about the 4Runner from the outside.

I was going back and forth between the General Grabber AT2 and the BFGs AT in 285/75/16. Ended up going with the BFGs b/c I knew they ran a little smaller & wanted to minimize any rubbing or trimming. But after finding out I can clear them pretty easily, I will definitely have to try the Generals out next.

With all the mod options available, I can see how it could easily become overkill

I ran those exact BFG TAs for years before switching to the General Grabber AT2s which are very very similar.

The only difference was Class D vs E (read lighter) and $300 extra in my pocket (when buying a set of 4)

I'm with Brian on the AT2s. I ran them on my previous Rig and loved them so much that I installed a set on my GX470 recently.


Very quiet, smooth, performs great, and as stated an excellent value!

I'm definitely not saying they are the best tire for every person but they are a great part time city, part time wheeling tire. Very good offroad performance, agressive look, long lasting and quiet on the roads.

I'm a big Dave Ramsey fan and I think he would be fine with everything I have already done and plan to do to my 4Runner. Even with thousands of dollars in maintenance and mods, you're still far better off financially than going into debt over a newer vehicle.

My perspective is that my vehicle is paid for, as are all the accessories and mods. I plan to put another 100,000+ miles on it, so why not build it how I want for the purpose I want?

I can't say I've gone too far, because I have carefully researched / REALLY wanted every mod that I've done. But I can say, with certainty, that I've spent too much in a short period of time, doing mods. As in - I started putting stuff on back-to-back and before I knew it.. had dropped too much money. I'd still be doing the same mods either way, just spreading it out a bit (ideally) so my wallet didn't feel the "ouch".

Example: Tundra TRD / OME 890's / Bilstein 5100's / extended rear brake line one month, then ARB bumper the next month, then Warn winch, lower ball joints, inner and outer tie rod ends this month.

Kind of all hit home when I realized how much that all cost, in such a short window..

So, Mr. Shooter, good question! I've been looking for where that line should be drawn myself. I'm currently trying to avoid hooking up a smartphone to the old factory stereo before replacing the radiator. The factory speakers can make my ears bleed nearly at stereophile quality, but I'm poking around at Polks for some reason. All 4 tires are in like new condition, but the front two are a different brand than the back two, and I'm eyeing OEM-sized DuraTracs when I should just avert my eyes and drive.

Maybe "too far" is a matter of keeping priorities straight as well.

120K service event? check. rear window message sign that can express my amazingly interesting thoughts to drivers behind me? just back away slowly...

I don't think its to far unless you have a whole roll cage around the truck, cut out doors and SAS. Other wise, like for example. I got le d lights, roof rack with Axe and shovel, I got skid plate and rock sliders. I got suspension lift with 33" tires. Its my daily driver. In two years I've taken it 2 times out into the woods. But I will always be ready to hit trails without worrying about demaging my oil pan, or my body or not being able to see the trail. I use my lights every day. In 4 am when I back out. Front led when driving through country roads. Rock sliders make it easier to get in and out. Also easier for cleaning the roof. Who is to say its to much. I see many jeeps with fox shocks and bumpers with soccer mom driving. I think its to know that at anytime you can go to a trail and be ready then be sorry. Its your car.
