go to tirerack.com and type in your size to get some idea of the variety of prices and offerings.
Use that to narrow down your search and then use that data to drive your local dealer down to a reasonable price.
Also discounttiresdirect.com if you have one of their shops close to you the shop will generally honor the online price.
Many of us have stepped up to a 265/75/16 but you should be aware this slightly narrower (tread width) but taller tire may cause slight rubbing in the front wheel well under full lock turns.
Also some folks prefer passenger tires designated P metrics-while others of us have gone to a LT-light truck designation.
Many of us are running Nitto Terra Grapplers and I remain satisfied with mine-although I have only about 4 months on mine so far-seems like 4 more like 6 I guess.
Are you wheeling off road ? or like most of us on the pavement 95% of the time/miles?

Okay I would probably encourage you to stay with the stock size then in the 70 series width. There are some fine offerings from Bridgestone and others in the $108-120 range.
P metrics tend to be a slightly softer ride in my opinion while an LT series tire tends to have stiffer sidewalls due to its construction and materials.

Sounds like a plan, I'll try to find something on tirerack.com I know they have decent selection as well as user ratings which always come handy. Off topic, how is your 5speed, have you ever compared it with manual, I'm just curious, is it a lot faster?

To fix an error written above a 265/75 is the same width as a 265/70, it is just taller. A 265/70/16 in a perfect world is 30.61" tall and a 265/75/16 is 31.65" and that difference will change the gearing and slow the speedo by 3.3% slow, and that height is what is making some people rub. You apparently can also go with a 275/70/16 at 31.16" tall or 1.65% off, but they are not as plentiful as the 265/75.
Now these are perfect world numbers, and all tires can very as to where they measure from, and type of construction. That is why some brand tires look wider than others in the same size. Look in tire rack and you can see just how much these tires can vary in diameter, tread depth, and weight.
I think I may try the Nitto Terra Graplers or Toyo Open Country. These seem well priced for what you get. I really want the look of a mudder, but the weight of the tires at 10+ pounds each of unsprung weight along with the fear of Mileage and sound degradation.

I upgraded to the General Grabber AT2's. They looks almost identical to the BFG All-Terrain tires. I got them in the 265/75/16 size. They are pretty aggressive for an AT tire, and you cant beat the 640 tread wear rating. I have about 30K miles on them, and just rotated them for the first time, looks like they are still brand new. I have no rubbing at all at stock height, and in the next week i will be lifting it 2 inches. I had Americas Tire price match them, and i got them for $117 each. Out the door with everything, i paid $600.

I did only drive one automatic 3rd generation Runner when I was shopping around for them and it really would not be fair to call it a comparison to a 5 speed.
It kind of scared me away from 3rd gens for about a year-I believe it had the full time 4wd package (sorry I do not know what that is called exactly in Yota speak)(maybe a 2000?) and then with the automatic it seemed so dog slow that I only drove it about 2 miles before rushing it back to the stealership. It made my GEN2 with a 22Re 4cylinder seem like a rocket and certainly a lot more nimble. It was way underpriced and that alone at a Yota dealership struck me as quite odd-it of course had very high miles-which is when I generally am able to afford them.
I am just old school-owned only one automatic vehicle which was smashed up about a month after purchase. T boned at an intersection by a non stop sign observant plumber! I think I have owned about 12 vehicles now and really hope to never give up the manual trannys -another irritation I have with the newer vehicles they offer)
Just yesterday I got the generically specific come on from the Yota dealer-we will buy your 99 4Runner for $8750.00!
Then in fine print it specified 99 with 4WD and V8 !!

What the hell do people do when they get tires from tire rack.com? I mean who has the equipmment lying around to put on tires and balance them.
I have bought around 15 sets of tires from tirerack and have never had a problem finding someone to do it. The most I have ever had to pay was $40 a piece at NTB and I learned never to use them again. Not the best option but walmart will install tires for $7-14 a piece usually mounted and balanced with new valve stems. I usually use a place with a hunter machine but the ones I have had done at walmart I have never had a problem.
I was looking at those Grabbers at Tire rack but they have been on backorder for over a month. in 265-70-16, $96 each plus shipping. I got the Toyo open countys in 275-70/16 for 109 each plus 70 shipping. at tiredealsforless.com. This is my first shopping experience with them so I have no opinion of them yet. Tire Rack has always shipped the next day.

I got my BGF All-Terrain KO at Sam's Club for under 780$. Not to metion they provide free lifetime rotation/balance(q6000miles) and warranty.
I really love these tires, they are quite on the road and do well in snow.
I previously owned Michelin Cross Terrain and really like those tires too, they do well on road but are still capable of handling some light off road excursions.

Well here is an update,
Tiredealsforless came through and I got the tires in 2 days. $520 total and I had them installed for $61 using a Hunter road force machine with the proper lugcentric adapter, and the balance is great. The Toyo open countrys look awesome for an A/T tire. I have REVO's on my Chevy 1500 and they are good but look kinda plain. The Terra grappler looks a little better but I wanted the wider 275/70. They make a little whine because of the thick tread, but not much more than the Michelin x radial Lt's that were near bald. I will try to post a picture. I went out on a limb to try these and I will keep everyone posted.
