good buy? 1ST GEN

I want to buy this '89 4runner with 244k mi. also some aftermarket work.

PROS- New radio with subwoofers. New radiator and cooling system. New tubing throughout the engine. no rust, major scrathches on the interior or exterior. Comes with both the hardtop and a custom softop. drives well (i took it for a spin)

CONS- It has no parking brake. The passenger window only rolls down from the drivers side. no airbags. no rear headrests.

they're asking $3,500 is that a reasonable price?

looks pretty clean to me. not enough info to say for sure - seems like it has to be worth 3500 easy if everything works. buying cars from a distance sucks - if you can see it in person and it runs as good as it looks buy it

What area do you live in? If its the south toyotas in general are expensive so id say this it looks clean if its the v6 then its no worth 4k but if its the 22re and it runs and the tranny is good then its worth 4k is fair for that provided it isnt a rust bucket.

I have a '86 with over 300K miles on it and a 22re. I wouldn't sell for it $4000. That one looks very clean. I'd buy it.

This one looks pretty clean, aside from the rather strange paint job and pointless hoodscoop, it seems to look rust free and maintained.

Are you near the vehicle to see it in-person? I wouldn't buy anything without being inside, looking under/over/around and taking it for a good long drive.

And 4 grand is about the going rate for clean trucks/4 runners in the Pacific NW too, although there's a lot more of them with rust from the wet climate.

Mine is approaching 200,000 and I would NOT sell it for 7,000, 8,000 or 9,000 at 10,000 i'd only go hmmmmmm....and then say no... It's not the $$$...

I guess I just don't understand the value some place on these trucks but that's me. Not complaining though since it might bode well for me if I ever decide to sell.

OP, $3500 seems reasonable to me given the info you've shared (and barring any unknown issues). I don't know what the market is like though in your neck of the woods. It certainly looks clean from the pictures. Just not fond of the color scheme or scoop as flyinhawaiian01 pointed out but maybe you can use that if you want to haggle.

I love my truck, have had it since 91, it was my daily driver for many of those years and its been through a LOT over those years! I would not be able to sell it, even if it was 20 grand!

Of course, in the time I've had it, I'm sure I've put more than that into it!

no worries. I was actually serious about being indifferent to the whole thing.

The only reason I'm holding on to my '86 is because it was my Dad's since new (sentimental value I suppose) and it's nice to have a truck for hauling things every once in a while. It's also been kept in great shape (all original). However, it takes up space on the side of my house and is a bit of a hassle. ....I wash it every week or two and try to run it once every week end just to keep the battery charged, etc. It's a neat truck. .....just not that attached to it to pass up a great offer if it came around.

I think 3.5, with no rust and like above, barring any problems outside what was mentioned is a reasonable offer. Remember a stack of dead presidents and the will to pick that stack up off the hood and walk will sure help that price fall rapidly. I wold feel confident and comfortable with under 3... 2.8 maybe 2.75... or the more i stare at that hood :mmph:

With that much mileage you should be looking at a complete refresh to the drive train, even if they say they did it. MAKE SURE

junkyard ebay craigs are your friends when it comes to finding headrests and who needs airbags when your wheeling:laugh:?


Edit: I do not think I would be okay trading the experiences and stories that have happened with/in my truck:whip2: for a stack of cash.....

I love the red truck color and matching interior! I think you need to find a cute little white 4runner and breed them ;]~

Depending on the interior condition, miles, and mechanical a truck similar to that just sold for $14,900

Its not apparent in the pics but the interior is actually tan/brown and in generally great shape as well except the faded carpet (e.g. no cracks on dash, etc.). It is an auto however which definetly affects its value.
