Good buy?

So here is my story. Long time jeep owner, and eventually sold it because of the absolutely awful gas mileage. After that, I bought a volvo sedan, which has been great in all areas but one, snow. I love the car, but coming from a rock crawling jeep to a car that can barely make it up a snow packed road, was tough. Now, I'm in the market for a 4runner. I've always wanted one, even back into the jeep days, and I think i'm slowly getting ready to pull the trigger on it. I hate to be "that guy", but I figured I'd get the most honest opinion from owners themselves. What is your opinion on this one here McManus Motors » Blog Archive » 1263 1998 TOYOTA 4RUNNER $3499
and what do you think a fair offer would be on this one? Thank you so so much for your help in getting me to join your little club :bluejump:

Honestly I would be all over that assuming everything checks out fine. If they came off that price any would be a really good deal imo.

Check KBB.com

then compare it to the condition of the truck. I also went from Jeeps to Toyota, never looked back !!

Check for corrosion underneath. This is something hard to fix, specially the frame. Everything else in a toyota is easy....

It looks a little rough on the interior and the dents on the exterior along with the missing right rear mud flap. These lead me to believe that it was not maintained very well. Of course, the price is decent. My 2.

Thats what I was thinking. I have yet to look in person so obviously I have no idea about maintenance, although the carfax shows no obvious flaws. The interior does look a little rough though. And along with some of those other things, I suppose they could just be bargaining points. Then again, the price already does seem lower compared to most out there, even in private party sales. Thats not always a good sign! Hmmmmm

Just bought it today!

If thats the case then I hope its a terrible car and it leaves you stranded on the highway just for buying it before me......

hahaha just kidding man, if you really did buy it then i wish you the best of luck with it and for me I guess its right back to the never ending hunt for a used car

Have it checked out by a mechanic if possible, but The price is right. In one picture it even shows it having the E-locker so snap it up.

Sweet thanks guys! The seat covers would be my first purchase haha. So what would be a good offer do you think? I mean it's a good price, but still who pays full price nowadays??

Yeah my rule of thumb is that I will never pay asking price. There's always room to negotiate. Some people don't like negotiating price because they find it confrontational in a way. I prefer to save money. With a dealer, you can ALWAYS negotiate. Private seller, depending on the person, you run the risk of them flat out not dealing with you anymore. With a dealer, the worst they can say is no.

In this case, already good price, so I'm assuming, not a lot of wiggle room. Like I said you can negotiate lower. I'd start at $3000 out the door (taxes and fees). I always look at big picture. If not, I'd say $3300-3400 OTD at most. If they say no, then leave. Wait for them to run out and try to stop you. If they don't stop you in the parking lot, wait a couple hours for a call. If they don't call then go back and buy it for what they want! I've done this stuff before. It usually works, ESPECIALLY if it's close to the end of the month and late in the day. You're welcome.

haha yeah I have a friend who is actually a car salesman, and he says the old
"turn around and walk out" will get them just about every single time. I don't know why some people don't like negotiating. For me its one of the only fun parts of the entire process :D

Oh and one last thing. Pretend that the dealer isn't human. They won't crucify you for lowballing them. The key is when you are looking at the vehicle, act interested, but nitpicky (aka this could use some work).
