Good deal or not?

I sold my 22re engined, 2 door 2nd Gen. back in June because I thought I was moving to the UK for a while. That didn't work out and now I need a new T4R!

I'm going to see this 1991 5 speed 3-point-slow tomorrow, it has 19X,XXX kms on it, and according to the seller (a dealer), no rust. The asking price is $3990 Canadian, and then there will be 13% tax on that, also, the dealer refuses to safety it, (too old, he says), so I will have to do that too. So, is the price right? Should I hold out for a 4 cylinder truck? What are my chances of ever finding another 2 door?

Can't tell you about Canada but in the US that would be way too much. In this area you could pick that up for about 2200.

The V6 is still a damn good engine.

Take those running boards off and put on some 32x11.5's

I am sorry, but I absolutely disagree. Perhaps it is your loyalty to it, but it is the single worst engine toyota every built. It lasted 5 years, in comparison to the average 12-15 year engine life for toyota because they killed it. It is extremely under powered and a flawed design. The cooling channels in the engine are not correct for the design and it caused abnormal heating/cooling resulting in warped head gaskets. The problem was so bad and so prevalent that Toyota issued a recall to replace them. The kept the recall open I believe until just the past few years.
This in combination with that engines horrid tendency to sludge makes that engine literally a ticking time bomb. I say, if you must get that age vehicle, stick with the 22re. I owned both, and stuck with the 22re. Honestly, the 3.0 doesn't have that much more power, and it is 1000 times more reliable.


I don't the market, so I won't comment on price. That said, I bought a 1990 4runner 22re in 2004 for 3000 US dollars.


Anyway. If you are going to get that engine. Check the oil, check the coolant. Look for contamination. Have it compression tested. Examine it very well.

Yes, the 22R-E kicks ass, but the 3.0L V6 isn't as bad as you make it sound. Mine has about 300,000 on it and it's almost 24 years old and boy does it run good.

22re engined trucks seem to sell for a premium up here, there are loads of V6 trucks, they outnumber the 4cyl maybe 15 to 1.

I really need a new runner, but I'm not knowledgeable at all. Is the 3.4l in the 3rd Gen. Trucks a better bet? What is the 4cyl in the 3rd Gens like? I really prefer the older trucks, but I need something reliable too. It seem like there aren't too many 4runners available in Toronto that will pass safety for less than $3500.

swapping in a 3.4 for your 3.slow would be an option to. im sure you could pull that engine and get a few hundred out of it. i pulled a blown v6 out last year and sold it for 300. 3.4 i believe is a bolt in (give or take) i think the mounts are the same. i know throwing a turbocharged 350 in is a bit of a trick.... tee hee... there have been people who got a v6 4runner and put a 2.4 in also. you can pretty much do anything if you have the patients

I've own a 3.0 and quit honestly i bought my truck for 4500 dollars with 178k its a 95 version and i havnt had no major problems with it what so ever.. it has power if u ask me, hell i've drove it 300 miles home to GA with no problems doin 75mph even 80 on cruise. besides bad gas mileage i find the 3.0a good motor just bad on gas. Any motor will last you as long as you maintain it. and take care of it. the truck has 184k on it now.
