Good preemptive maintenance

Hey, everybody. Just picked up my T4R recently with 188k on the clock. Here are the stats on maintenance

Oil: Changed 4,500 miles ago
Diff/Transfer case: 70,000 miles ago
Transmission: 55,000 miles ago
Brakes: 4,500 miles ago

My dad and I are planning a big road-trip (like 4,000 miles) for summer of 2018 (my HS grad year) and he's very hesitant about even considering to take the T4R (I wanna go off roading and his '14 WK2 Laredo just won't cut it).

I've got enough 5w-30 mobil 1 synthetic downstairs to do a change but I think I'll hold off til 190k to bring the oil change interval up to 6,000 miles. As for transmission fluid I think I should be fine for at least another 50,000 miles. Definitely due for diff/transfer oil change soon. Other than that would should I expect for reliability/preventative maintenance?

Welcome!
Coolant 100k
Belt
Power steering fluid
Brakes
Grease drive shafts & u-joints
Engine air filter
Cabin air filter
Spark plugs
Brake fluid

CV boots torn?
Does your 4LO work?
Is your spare in good shape?
The maintenance manual can be found online if you don't have one in your glovebox.

Was gonna do coolant too (as it's inexpensive) but read up a ton on the whole red/green thing. Basically from what I've read it's the pink OIC coolant I have to worry about, can I just open my rad cap and check this (when the engine is cool of course)? Or does it change color over time (as it is a dye that colors it...)

My assumption by "belt" is the serpentine. Have a friend with an 07 Taco replaced his serpentine at 200 so sounds about right.

Is there a way to tell if the steering fluid needs to be changed (color?) or just mileage intervals?

Brakes were recently done, no issues there.

Gonna definitely do that as I've been getting 'the clunk' recently. Just not enough cash to buy a grease gun/lube atm.

Gonna def. do an air filter and probably HCF delete sometime soon, definitely good idea.

Cabin air filter I might check out... again not a huge priority but good to remember/maintain

Not sure when sparkplugs were last replaced, aren't they supposed to go 100k roughly? Are there any signs that I should replace them or are they one of those parts you replace at an interval?

Plan on keeping some brake fluid on hand in case anything weird happens... Damn I hate changing brake fluid though... :p

Alignment definitely one of things I'd do before a trip but not now. Again thnx for adding it :)

CV boots have very minor tears and are in good shape (somewhat recently replaced

4LO works perfectly and I run 4WD/4lo/locker at least once a month for a few mins

Just checked spare and gave it air (TPMS was on). Need to make sure it's not past the whole 9 year old thing as tires shouldn't really be driven on @ that age.

I've got in in the box, thanks again, jfry!

You'll want Toyota PINK Coolant. A few places like NAPA and Pep Boys carry the corporate unbranded jugs. Same thing without the label. I use Zerex Asian without a problem, but some folks like to stick to OEM for certain fluids.

Serpentine belt is a wear item. Different for every truck. Don't go off your buddy's. It's easy to check as all you need is a visual and a tug. It's also a cheap part to replace.

Brake fluid isn't as hard, but I know what you mean. The rear brakes are hydro assisted tho. Just hold the pedal down with the key in ON position and it'll drain itself. For the front, its the regular pump and hold, open bleeder.

I use color and smell for power steering, but it's so easy to do, why question it? Some folks also just turkey baster out the reservoir every oil change instead of a full flush. As long as you're replenishing the additives in the fluid.

Cabin filter: Pull it out, if it's not too bad, just shake the junk out. If you're an allergy sufferer, replace it sooner than later.

OEM V6 plugs are copper and only rated for 30k. You might want to see what's in your engine. Toyota used 2 different assembly lines for the heads, so if it's still OEM or someone did OEM replacements, you'll notice DENSO plugs in one bank and NGK plugs in the other. Copper plugs are cheap and easy to access on the 1GR. I'd just swap them out and not question it for peace of mind.
