Good price for 99 Limited?

Been lurking around here for a while now and I am thinking about getting a 99 4Runner with 138K Miles for $10K out the door. Is this a good price for this vehicle or am I getting ripped off? Its a two-tone white with silver, leather, auto climate control, the electronic 4WD, sunroof etc etc.

Seems to be in good condition haven't driven it yet, its got brand new Michelin LTX M/S tires. What do you guys think?

Here's a pic. It will be cleaned up, it had just come in as a trade.

Does it have a maintenance history? If so, that's a good price. However, if not, I'd try to negotiate more or have that dealership agree to have the maintenance stuff done. Such as, cooling system, timing belt and water pump, diff/x-case fluids., etc. If they will do it themselves, make sure they use ALL TOYOTA fluids and parts.
 
Sorry to disappoint you, but I just walked out the door with that EXACT truck for a little under $8,000. Now I have TWO '99 Ltd. 4wds!!! Yay!!! It is sitting in my driveway now.

These don't show up in lots very often around here, and you've got to jump right on them if you really want one, especially a 4wd model!

Yeah I kind of had a feeling that it was on the high side, but it is actually in pretty good condition and a one owner. I'll see if he can do it for 9000 out the door, if not I'll wait till I find something else. I am actually headed there in about an hour to take it out for a drive and if he goes for my price, perhaps I'll be a 4Runner owner by the end of the day.

How about the mileage, is that excessive? Should I be concerned?

Mileage isn't that bad (many many 3.4L 4Runners and Tacoma's have 300+k miles and still going strong). However, it really depends on the maintenance history. Have a mechanic check it out for a pre-purchase inspection. Personally, I'd take it to a Toyota dealership, but any trusty mechanic will do.

Getting it checked out by GO toyota on Arapahoe. There seems to be a lot of tiny rust spots all over the car, CARFAX says it came from Arizona so I'm not sure if this is a problem. The rust spots are only noticeable if you get really close to the panel. The drivetrain is solid though, shifts perfect and its got good power. Transfer case makes a click noise when disengaging, dealership will check that out.
 
i have the same truck. It just hit 90k.

Sorry to be blunt but Carfax sucks and is worthless. Rust spots....and the truck is from ARIZONA? That sounds wrong.

What is the warranty? If not stellar, get it checked out by a good mechanic at another shop.

9k is good if maintained, IMO

Car dealers are in the business to SELL. Remember that.
 
Look Inside for rust

Rust!! The 4 runner could have been in a flood. Check under the dash or any where there is metal. I almost bought a Ford Explorer when i noticed rust inside and under the dashboard. I knew something was up when the SUV had new carpets and seats. :awais:

The tiny rust spots might not be rust.

Look closely, and see if the stuff comes off of the surface. Some of the trees around here are nearing bloom, and some of the residue that they deposit onto the car's paint look just like rust.

Scratch at them with your fingernail, and you'll see that it does come off, albeit with some work. Royal PITA, just ask how I know.

One day (last week) I see this stuff all over the truck, and I'm thinking, WTF Rust!?!?! I had just washed it and the stuff was visible after getting the road grime off. Claying works best to remove the crap.

Well I took it to GO Arapahoe Toyota which is a different dealer than the one I am buying it from, their service department said that the truck is in great condition, nothing wrong with it at all. Looks like the dealership I'm buying it from has just put on new tires, brakes and there was a small leak in the rear axle that they have fixed. I like the center and rear diff locks that its got, looks like thats an option on the Limiteds only because all the SR5's I've looked at did not have this.

I gotta check on those spots again but they were on the back door and a couple of the side panels so I'm not sure if it could be from the trees. The paint is not peeling anywhere and it still shines. The seats and carpets are original, the driver's side seat has been used because its cracked and there is no rust under the dashboard.

Thanks for your replies guys, this is good stuff. These 4Runner's are really hard to find for a low price. Also seeing that there are several folks in Colorado, do you guys get together and go 4Wheelin? Might have to join you guys sometime if you do.
 
Yep,the multi-mode autos were only on the Limiteds til '01 then the SR5s got the center diff lock but with the '99-'00 Limiteds you also had the rear diff lock option.

And welcome to the forum from another Littleton-ite. :cool:
 
This is good to hear.

I have had my truck since '00 (trade in from lease w/10k) and it has been excellent. Used it as a daily driver in DC (bad drivers, bad roads) and now in Maine (not as many drivers, really bad roads and bad weather). I also tow.

The only feature I don't have is the locker but I don't off road.

I expect to keep it for another 90k which, at the rate I am adding mileage, will be 2016.

3rd gens are the best! :awais:

That's exactly where I noticed the spots on mine; the tailgate and the two rear sides. Maybe it is a combination of the trees and the Mag Chloride on the roads? I don't know, but it did come off of mine, it was on the surface of the paint, and it wasn't rust.

By the way, welcome to the forum!!! I'm jealous you got a rear locked version of my truck.

I can't complain too much though, because I practically stole mine 3 years ago. Prices now are about what I paid for mine, because it was sold as a 2wd instead of a 4wd (idiots!!!). It was pristine when I bought it.

There are plenty of places to go up in the mountains, we're a lucky bunch here in Colo.
 
Oh, and another thing - if you can get it out the door for $9k, I think you're doing pretty darn well. $10k is a fair price, but I think you should be able to get them to knock it down some.

One thing I said before which wasn't a joke is that these don't show up for sale real often around here (in this trim: ltd. + 4x4). This is for good reason; people love these trucks! When you do find one, they're usually trashed. I've been keeping my eye out for another one like the one you're looking at - good catch!

The oil leak you mentioned in the rear was likely the axle seal. Make sure they did indeed fix this, and not just clean up the mess to sell it. This can affect your rear brake shoes; initially making the brakes inoperable. If the shoes sit in the oil and get saturated, they can swell and can make getting the drum off dang near impossible. One of the only things I've had to fix on my truck was to replace the rear seals. Mine has a few thousand more miles on it, and I still haven't changed my timing belt (will probably use that tax rebate to do this).

Another one like this showed up in the classified section here a few days ago (a 2000). The seller is in Denver/Boulder, and he's asking about the same price.

Brought it back today, they're going to take a look at the "rust" spots on the car. It hadn't been detailed on the outside so they are going to detail and then check if the spots disappear. The front bumper was bent down on the right front because the previous owner bumped into something, they are going to take a look at that as well. Overall I was impressed with that truck, it had plenty of power climbing up 285 to Conifer and it handles great, brakes were also really good.

But, they have a silver 2002 Limited with 93K that they're asking $3000 more for and I am tempted, this car looks brand new, nothing wrong with it at all. I am very tempted to just pay the extra and have a newer car with less miles. They said they will get back to my on friday because it will take them all of tomorrow to detail and fix the bumper, we'll see what happens then.
 
i'd go ahead and get the newer one with less miles for the extra cash if it does turn out the other one has rust spots
 
If it truely IS rust, it would make me wonder. The spots on mine were pretty small; roughly 1/16" to about 3/32" diameter.

Keep in mind the '02 won't have quite as much ground clearance if that matters to you.
