Good price? Southern Cal.

Hi all,

I'm in Southern Cal and looking to buy a 2011 SR5, 4x4, blizzard pearl, with the convenience package, backup camera, the radio/bluetooth option, third row, power seats, cross bars and cargo mats (although I might just see if they'll remove this).

Looks like the msrp is $ 35,369.00 and the price I'm being quoted $32,427. Is this a good deal? The price is minus tax and fees; how much should I expect the "fees" to run? The quoted price does include a destination charge, tda, gas charge, dealer holdback and a wholesale financial reserve.

Thanks for any input.

That is a pretty good price - $3,000 off MSRP. You can probably get them a little lower. Mine was $36,345, and I got it for $32,050. The diff is I got the wheel locks (didn't want), the anti-theft alarm (didn't want), and then carpet mats (didn't know I could give them back).

WHATEVER YOU DO - DO NOT BUY THE WARRANTY FROM THEM!!!! I already got quotes for another dealer - Jerry at Midwest Superstore Toyota in Hutchinson, KS. The warranty was $594 for 7/75. The stealership wanted $1,500 for the same warranty. I bought scotchguard at WMT and put that on my seats.

Fee's depend on the dealer, but you can call the finance department and ask what their doc fee is which is usually the highest. I've seen those range from 300-600. Tell them you will pay 35k (or offer less) out the door or you can also check to see what costco offers.

Doc fees in SoCal range from $50-80. 300-600 is what I see in the SE states. No problem getting a 4R in SoCal for 500-1000 under invoice. Never offer OTD because it shows you have no clue what you are doing.

Is $1500 for dealer holdback outrageous?

You should never be charged for holdback. Holdback is paid to the dealer by the manufacturer. Some unscrupulous dealers will show the holdback to the buyer and claim that that is a fee they paid to the manufacturer when it is the other way around. One reason that dealers can sell below invoice and still make a profit is because of this holdback.

TDA is a bogus fee as well. So is wholesale financial reserve.

Go to edmunds to find the invoice. Offer $1000 below invoice and see where it goes. Some dealers will bite. As always, your area dictates how many options you have. In SoCal, it is a breeze to get these prices.

My dealer says it's "there's nothing [they] can do about it"

btw I'm going through costco.

Costco pricing is "okay". It is a good if you don't want to do any research. The Costco price was about $900 above what I paid. On a Costco deal, there is NO negotiation. That is what Costco agrees to and, frankly, if you read the fine print, what you agree to when you accept the Costco auto agreement.

Go to Edmunds, spend a few hours doing research, figure out the Edmunds invoice price, email lots of dealers from Santa Barbara to San Diego and get the best price.

If you don't want to do all that, take the Costco price. It is a good deal.

Like Larry says, if you try to negotiate OTD, you are ignorant. The dealer has ZERO control over taxes and title, and they will vary from city to city. The dealer doesn't keep these items, so why put them in the negotiation?

it's a good thing that i know what i am doing than. i'm a numbers person, so i always calculate everything out before i go to a dealer to know what i am willing to pay to get the payment i want.

I'm not saying that this is you or happened to you but if you go into a dealership talking "payment", you are the biggest type of sucker there is and ripe to have every trick in the book executed on you.

Always go in talking vehicle price.

i might have to agree. I foolishly negotiated 'what i can afford a month' vs. total cost of the car. they countered with 'okay here's a loan for 66 months instead of 60'.
I love my car and to this day don't feel like i was taken to the cleaners or pulled over a barrel but definitely wish i had done more research ahead of time.

here are the numbers if you're interested;
05 with (at the time) 43k miles. bought used oct 08 for 22k financed. no cash down, 2k credit on trade-in. 3.9% @ 66 months; ~360.00/month.
I bought extended warranty, lo-jack, also got a coupon booklet for free regular/scheduled maintenance (oil changes w/filter, tire rotation, etc).
