Good Shop in San Diego?

Hands down. James at the Truck Shop is the only other man who can wrench on my truck. He has been taking care of it for a few years now. He's locate don Miramar, near the airplane museum...there are a few of us on here that use him exclusively.

When Protrux was still in business in San Marcos and James was the mgr, customer service was excellent. He knows his yota's forward and backward. If I have anything I need done that I can't do myself, I'd probably go to them too.

Yes. I too am a patron of the Truck Shop. I wouldn't take my truck anywhere else. They open at 9am btw.

I've been going there for years.
They have always been competent and very honest.
Also the fact that it is privately owned and James is there helps a lot.

I've never had first hand experience with the Truck Shop but I bought a used prerunner. TS built a full cage, and installed a long travel kit, and boy was it messed up. Tubes half welded, tube notches with gaps big enough to get your pinky in. Shocks mounted at different angles. Shock mounts that rubbed on the shock body caps, and so on. Maybe they're a good mechanics shop, but I'd look else where for fab work. Unless things have changed I'd look at recent work they've done and go from there.

The work I had done back in the day by Protrux (where he managed before The Truck Shop) was mostly mechanical and he saved me a bunch of cash. I had a 93 ext cab Toyota that had a full time locker that grenaded, and James sourced a used replacement 3rd and saved me some cash. Real honest & knowledgeable guy.
That being said, I also had a skid plate made on a 94 reg cab Toyota with a mostly finished bumper, and that fab work was contracted out by someone he knew, not a full time employee. Not sure how the Truck Shop is running things now, but take that info for what it's worth. I personally would go to them for any mechanical stuff before I take it to the stealership or anywhere else for that matter. I've got a timing belt job coming up now that I think about it, and I'll probably end up there for it.

You said you never were a customer just the previous owner.
Not to doubt you but some guys get there work done at multiple shops and then put a Truck Shop sticker on it.
I've even had James mention to me that a good amount of his business is when people bring broken fab work over to his shop to fix.
The only fab work they have done for me is my rocksliders. The welds all looked good to me and have held up over the years.

I had receipts saying they did the work.
I'm just giving my personal experience. Take it how you would like. There could have been an employee that was fired for doing poor work. I have no idea. Just stating that the truck they built had poor fab work in certain areas. After working at a fab shop and learning the skills to do the work myself. There's only a handful of shops that I would trust with the fab work done on my truck. A cage is meant to save lives and not become a death trap.

Well if you know any other shops please mention them.
I've been pretty satisfied over the years and I like the fact that the owner is there and I don't have to talk with some hourly shop manager when questions or issues arise.

If you're speaking fab shops, there's a few. Depending on budget.
Richer Racing, Blitzkrieg, Camburg, there's a couple more I could add.
But a far as mechanics I'm sure Truck Shop SD is just fine. I've taken my LX450 to YotaMasters in Riverside. Small 2 man shop, but I like it because I can hangout and learn while they work on my rig.

The Truck Shop did my heads @199k.
I have a thread about the ordeal.
I felt they were fair and I've had no issues since.
I now have new aftermarket JE heads, each side. This is different than rebuilt heads.
