I am in need of some new tires for a 97 4Runner that will be used mostly on road but will also need to perform well off-road. So far I have narrowed it down to the Duratracs and Terra Grapplers. Who has had experience with these tires? What are the pros and cons of each. I have heard of concerns with sidewall strength on both types but want to get some other's opinions.

There are many threads on both the Duratracs (lots of hype on these lately) and Terra Grapplers so search and you will find the answer!
IMO- Love the duratracs as many others on here do. I chose duratracs over terra grapplers b/c they are meatier, seemed better for offroad use, and the nitto's were on a back order not too long ago so didn't want to wait.

I had Nittos for almost 5 years just before I bought my Duratracs and both do well on the street and in the rain but the Goodyears have a little more bite in the snow,a little less dry grip but are a bit more agressive when it comes to the rocks on the trails.
The Nittos suit the street a little better but still did fine on the trails and sidewall strength hasn't been an issue on either tire but the Nittos can be had in a D load range where the Goodyears are in C and E and E is way too much for a light truck like a 4Runner.
Same place off road just separated by several years.

FWIW, I've got 62K miles (and climbing) on my Nitto TGs :bigok:. They've always performed great for me off road and on road. Main reason I purchased them a few years ago was the price. When I bought the set a few years ago, I only paid $114.00 a tire.

the problem i've seen with the nitto's is that whenever the terrain gets wet or slippery off-road, the nitto's have a difficult time getting traction compared to the duratrac's. the nitto's are great on road but less than great off-road in my opinion. i just got my duratracs several months ago and love them on and off the road. made a 1400mi road trip last month with them and had no problems or complaints and they're 33's
