I'm having a helluva time deciding what to get for tires for my 98 4runner SR5. I found a great deal on the Silentarmors and had decided to get them but I have to wait a couple weeks for the sale and have read a lot of reviews in the meantime mentioning a large decrease in gas mileage...up to 3-4mpg!!! And since I am making the switch from 265/70/16's to 265/75/16's I didn't want to have a compound effect on an inevitable reduction in mileage due to the larger tires. However, I have done a bit more digging and talked to a Goodyear dealer and have discovered that the Silentarmours come in several different versions...4 ply, 6 ply, 8 ply and 10 ply. The 4 ply is passenger vehicle rated and likely plenty heavy enough for 80% pavement/snow/ice and 20% gravel/offroad. The 4-ply's will be much lighter and I suspect that the gas mileage decrease will be relatively small. I suspect that the people talking about the a big reduction in gas mileage have ended up with a much heaver 8 or 10 ply tire. I will be getting them in a couple of weeks and will check back after i've run a couple of tanks of gas through my rig.
