We can infer a lot from the articles that he posted but, the only fact is the tire earns a rating of 110 versus a benchmark of 100 in packed snow.

Tire pressure plays a big role in traction too. If the tires are aired up to the max and hard as a rock they will slide.

The snowflake isn't really rated for ice, it's rated for snow. Normally when you are heading up into the mountains, it's snow packed roads, and the tires with the snowflake have been tested and work well... I have BFG A/T's and have seen much improved snow traction over the past two winters as compared to the stock Dunlops. However, on the snow covered black ice which we have had a lot of lately, the only thing that matters is distance and light touch on the brakes/downshifting... There are edges on the BFG's that do catch well which the Dunlops and GY's don't have, but these same edges tend to make much more noise on dry pavement.
