Got a 4wd v8 tell me why I shouldn't trade in for a v6

But but... the V8 Goes VROOM VROOM! I like that sound, not the WHEEZE WHEEZE PUTTER that the wind-up cars make, or even worse the "WHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNE" that the horrid hybrids make! :O

Vroom Vroom is worth the gas!

What he said! :flame::flame:

Horsepower is not as good an indicator as you would think. Easiest example is that while the V6 on paper shows higher HP, once loaded up it falls behind the V8.

I've noticed on the Tundras that they get crap mileage, but at least it's consistent; it doesn't really change that much when you tow trailers or extra weight. The same with my V8, I got maybe 13~14mpg around town stock, now I get about 11mpg, maybe 12 on a good day... with all the crap I have on mine.

Reading this thread really makes me appreciate the fact that I landed a dream job making 30k more a year working from the comforts of my home. My 2008 V8 AWD 4Runner spends lots of time sitting in the garage. And when its not in the garage you will find it out exploring all the awesome remote spots that Arizona has to offer. I used to throw $20 a day at it for gas and now I enjoy throwing $5 at it every other week with the exception of my road trips. Its a win win situation and considering it has a fresh timing chain, water pump, front bearings, brakes all around, etc its going to live a long happy life. Its safe to say that I don't give a rats ass about MPG. With 115,000 miles on the clock I couldn't ask for a better truck. However I can understand if its eating away at your paycheck as a daily driver. I wouldn't swap the V8 for the V6 though, you very much regret it...

We are over supplied with oil. 100,000 oil field workers out of work in the US. I say we help them out by doing our part. Keep the big engine and keep the right pedal pressed to the floor!

V-8 = 'merica. V6's were introduced by Canada back in the 70's in an attempt to emasculate American men. So far it's been somewhat effective.

06 V8 2WD and averaging 16 mpg mixed driving. Towing 3800# trailer I got just under 14 mpg. I got about the same mileage from my 01 4WD V6 so why did I trade up? Because the V8 makes driving so much smoother and easier. I can easily get up to speed where the V6 you had to floor it.

Of course my dd is a 93 MR2 or an 02 Honda VFR so gas mileage isn't a problem for me.

All said and done though V8 >>>> V6 with everything else being equal. For 2 mpg difference you have more power available to you and you can haul your armor and mods around more easily.

FYI you can remove the 3rd row seats and stick them in the shed like I did. It takes less than 5 minutes.

I have a v6, with 275/70r18 KO2 which are a tad over 33" tall and a lift and I average anywhere from 17-20 mpg depending on how hard I put my foot in it. Yeah the v8 has more power. The v6 isn't awful though. I've thought about trading mine in for a limited v8 a few times but is it really worth the extra 3-6 grand? I'm not so sure. I got mine for a steal. Plus I'll be in the market for a gen 6.5 anyways when it gets here.

You're getting body-on-frame gas mileage regardless. The V8 and V6 are night and day in terms of refinement and effortlessness. It's almost funny how this generation 4Runner got one the most refined and one of the least refined engines Toyota had. Don't do this.

I love my 2004 SE V6 and went with it primarily because I wanted to have 2WD at times and also didn't want to have to deal with a timing belt.

That said, I have 265/70-17 General Grabber AT2s and get 17mpg on the highway. The V6 is NOT worth the money to switch.

Also, not sure why people think the V6 is down on power...it makes 10hp more than the V8 and 40 less torque (depending on the year), but weighs several hundred pounds less. The different powerband is what makes it feel slower. I almost never have to take mine over 3k rpm to merge onto the highway at 70-80mph, so that's fine for me.

Edit: As far as hauling weigh, yea the V6 isn't as good. But acceleration-wise (stock) it's fine.

I get 14 maybe 14.5 on the freeway with my v6 and it doesnt have anything heavy. I dont know how these v6 owners are getting 17, 18 or 20. I would stay with the v8. Or just get what you like. The only way to really know what a vehicle gives mpg wise is driving it. When i got the v6 stock nothing done to it i was getting 18 i think was the best it did. Everyone told me ill be getting 21mpg. Yeah ok. Everyone that lifted with big tires also told me they get 16 17 mpg on freeway. And thats them saying the drive between 65 to 80 mph. That me after i started owning and hand calculating my mpg :moping: enjoy your 4runner. Thats what am doing with my wimpy v6 that gives me 14 mpg mixed city and freeway. And 14.5 mpg freeway lol

I would stay with the Y8, but I am kind of biased toward them. Every vehicle (all trucks) I have owned in my 20 years of driving has bee an V8 except for my last one. But that was a Cherokee with a 4.0 I-6 so that doesn't count :D I just like the additional torque along with a flatter torque curve. Never tow anything, just a personal preference. As has been said, MPG is neglible and shouldn't be of concern in a truck like this. All I wish is that there was an easy way to add a little more power because, well, more is always better!

The belt vs chain argument doesn't mean jack. If the guides go bad, then you're screwed. You're going to need to do the water pump on the V6 anyway, so I'd rather know that my timing belt was done at the same time. What difference does the cost of changing the belt really add anyway? I'd rather the V8 all day. The refinement of it is just so fantastic.

This^^
Toyota timing chains can stretch whether it is a 2.4 22R or a 4.0 1GR-FE, or the guides wear out for that matter. A timing chain will still require maintenance

I currently have a GG 04 v8 w/ 3rd row. It's an awesome truck and I love her but she has a drinking problem. I kind of knew it was going to be bad going in but didn't think it would get this bad. Now I'm wary of throwing a bumper or roof rack on her because at the moment I get on average 11.5mpg in the city and 15mpg or so on the fwy. If it is all fwy miles then I'll get around 330 miles on the tank but when I commute which is all normal street she'll get around 230 miles on the tank. I put 275/70 ko2's and a 3" lift so the actual miles and what it shows is probably off by quite a bit.

I don't tow anything. I don't have kids so I don't put the 3rd row to use. I got her primarily because I got what I think was a good deal and the truck had super low miles on it. The last owner was a senile couple who never drove it. Had 63k miles and maintenance records were all done at Toyota since the car hit the road. Timing belt was also done.
I had 265/75/17 ko2 E rated on the gx470 to help with the soft air suspension and body roll and can see the mileage drop around 2 mpg, and also in acelleration. Took them off and put on the v8 4R and the 3" lift, the mpg is about 12 in the city and 15 on the hwy. after all you can't have both world. Ps: its very rare to have a v8 4wd with third row.

The third row actually has never been in the car. Its just I rather have preferred not having it so the rear seats would fold down flat but honestly its not too big of a deal

Besides that looks like the general consensus is that v8 is far superior than v6. Should have gotten an 05+ v8 though..

Woah I didn't know that

I mean, I know there have to be plenty of people (including myself) that would probably take it off of your hands for you lol.
