Got a trophy hanging on the wall?

Getting all geared up for deer season...starts Sept. 27th here in central Ohio. Deer hunting is one of my favorite hobbies....nothing like sitting up in that treestand and listening to nature waiting on the monster to walk by. I've passed up a few nice bucks, but don't get me wrong, I usually hunt for meat, not racks. (Deer racks that is....) Got a nice one on your wall? Post a pic!

Here's a 7 that I shot with bow and 8 that I shot during gun season

Good looking deer. I love guns, don't have much of an opportunity to hunt. My friends in CT are getting stoked for season :bigok:

Yeah, don't have a whole lot of time to hunt either, but I try every chance I get. Between work and school, I barely have time to sleep.....that's why I usually shoot the first deer that comes along. Gotta put some meat in the freezer every chance I get

yeah, that's what I was assuming also. Either way, I see it as feeding my family and helping to thin out the over populated deer here in Ohio. They'll thank me next time one runs out in front of them and smashes their 4Runner lol :biggrin2:

i've got friends who go hunting with no problem, BUT in your thread title, naming it TROPHY was kind on a thin line.

about the 'overpopulated' area, you made me smile: hmmm, let me think: India, China, New York, are overpopulated, right? what do you suggest??

feeding your family? come on, i can enjoy a buffalo burger myself, but saying that you made it sound like we are in 1800's and fighting to survive.

and last but not least, i will never thank anyone for killing a poor animal like that.

Several benefits to hunting:
1) hunters are excellent conservationists. Folks from Ducks Unlimited are pretty much the only thing keeping developers from draining wet lands all over the US and killing them off. That's just one example, there are many more.
2) reduce competition among herds. Since predators like wolves are a non-factor, deer populations are out of control. They become a nuisance, eating your garden, breaking fences, and becomming road kill. All the while, the living ones are skinny and underfed, suffering. The hunter assumes this predatory role helping the herd remain at a healthier number
3) venison is very lean and healthy, much more so than beef, pork, or really any domestic animal for that matter.
4) hunting, like it or not, brings families together. Not all hunters are blaze-orange clad drunks who shoot at anything that moves. Most are stone cold sober, with a good strategy, and kill in one shot, nearly painless for the animal. In the meantime, the kids learn about nature, life and death, and have a new respect for the woods and its animals. **** (insert first name here) Cheney killing 100 chuckers is the extreme exception. Most are law abiding and shoot a limit or less, eating or using all the quarry.

And, if its a passion, Trophy is just fine. If I got a huge fish, I would call it a Trophy as well.
Free food (minus the license and equipment and gas, lodging, etc.), especially in this day and age, is nothing to balk at. You may choose to eat meat someone else killed in a slaughter house, but don't rip people who still chose to shoot their own. Up here, venison is part of a year-round diet for many families.
As far as over population, us humans don't have predators. Mother nature will kill us all off or kill many of us off when she can't support us anymore. Deer at least have predators to keep the natural balance, even if those predators are humans.

But, thanks for wishing the guy a safe hunt!

i guess growing up in the city, don't discover all this.

Thanks for the open mind. I have nothing against folks who think hunting is cruel or in-humane, or barbaric or whatever. I just hope folks understand that the days of poaching and drinking are gone for all but the very small numbers of folks who want to ruin it for everyone. The responsible sportsman should be a steward of his/her environment and should make sure others who aren't sportsmen understand that.

We will have fun, looks to be a good season up here. You have fun with your autumn, too, ozana.
 
sorry, guess I should've used better terminology. Come to Ohio and you'll completely understand just how out of control the deer population is. For example, in past years, hunters have only been able to shoot 1 buck and 2 does. It's got to the point to where the state is allowing a big portion of Ohio to shoot 6 deer in 1 season. Only 1 buck is still allowed, but after buying the antlered deer tag, we are able to buy 5 more doe tags. As TheBlueWave mentioned, not only are we helping control the herds, but by purchasing the hunting licenses ($20) and deer tags ($24 for the antlered and $15 for each addition doe tag) we are contributing to conservation of the environment. And about the over population in India, China, etc..... come on, how can you honestly compare that to the over population of deer? It's called birth control......they don't sell condoms for deer. That's where I come into the picture. lol :D Also, for the amount of money you're spending on meat at your local grocery store, I can stock up my freezer with venison for much much cheaper. Anyhow, everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I respect that. I don't expect everyone to agree with "killing a poor animal like that", but don't badger me when you don't completely understand the issue. We all have hobbies and things we look forward to doing, this just happens to be one of mine. And if you honestly knew how hard it truly is to kill one of these magnificent creatures, you would understand. They don't just walk right up to you......A lot of work and preperation is required. I've logged many hours hunting and I've gone entire seasons without even getting a shot off. But when that time comes, it's a feeling like no other. I have a 2 year old son and I can't wait till he's old enough to go hunting with me. And trust me, he'll be taught all the proper techniques and will go through all the same hunter safety courses that I went through. I just hope he enjoys it as much as I do. But if he doesn't agree with it, I would never pressure him into hunting. To each their own.......

Unfortunately they are not all like BlueWave but he is absolutely right on all the positive results from hunting. New Jersey has no shortage of deer either, but that would be the case with any animal after man has removed said animal's natural predator(s).
