Got an '89 4 free, but has problems. Help!

A friend is moving out of State and has given me his '89 4Runner

He spent a ton of money on it before parking it a year ago and buying a new truck.
It has over $1,500 in tires and wheels still like new! New brakes and new half shafts, plus a bunch of smaller stuff!

The manual tranny is giving some problems in 1st and reverse and the engine runs rough. His mechanic replaced all the obvious things, but it didn't help.

Have any of you experienced the tranny grinding gears when shifting?

He says he has to crank the engine repeatedly before it starts and then it runs rough. Fuel filter has been replaced.

Anyone experienced this problem?

Also, I would like to install a locker in the front diff. Any suggestions?

Thanks for any help

The syncro's are bad or the clutch is going or the slave cylynder it could be many things.

Same with the starting...my first guess is fuel pump but could be others...disrt. cap rotor..plugs..injectors..cold start switch...

I say cut your losses. Give up now and dump it on me.

Let me think about that offer :nono: :biggrin2:
I had read elsewhere that a worn bushing might be the culprit in the tranny. This will be my first 4Runner, so will need to become aquainted with their quirks.

Heck, I'm still discovering new tricks on my '86 Mitsu Montero :driving: I might dump IT on you though! LOL

Is it blowing smoke under acceleration? Or at any time for that matter? If so what color? As for the other problems.....Im new to the 4 runner world...Im not sure on there quirks either.

No smoke. No fluid levels dropping mysteriously, no mixed fluids.

It's still at his place, so can't wait to get it here and start checking things for myself!

I was leaning twords rings. But since its not smoking I wouldnt bet on it. I would run a compression test to be safe.

Check the fuel pressure. If the pump is bad, or something else is that's lowering the pressure, it could produce those symptoms.

Put a locker in the rear 1st.
