Here's the deal: 1989 T4R, 3.0L, manual, lifted, with what looks like 33 or 32s. They have it listed at $1995, looks like the paint is a little faded. Tires may need replacing for the winter. No idea on the maintenance history, but the dealer knows the p/o. Guy says he's open to "reasonable" offers, but who knows how low he'll go. What do you think? I've had little success with the "flash your cash" method at stealerships in years past, but do you think $1500 might sway him?

OK, before you jump into anything check the frame for rust. The 80's trucks are infamous for it. It starts from inside the frame and by the time you can see it it's too late. Cab mounts too.
When was the Timing Belt last replaced ? Should be every 80K mi or so.
It's a 3.0, has it had any Head Gasket problems? The 3.0's are notorious for it, there was a recall for it.
It's IFS, has it had the steering relay rod recall done on it?
Not trying to scare you off, just good info that can be used for bargaining.
I'd go closer to $1K.

The '89 was not even worth $1k. Hack job were the only words that came to mind. They wasted over two hours of my time just getting the thing started, the body had some holes in the back and let in exhaust fumes from the single cherry bomb exhaust, the tires were weather-cracked and horribly out-of-round so the ride was bouncy and shaky, the ECU was hanging from the wires and resting on the passenger floor. It ran great, but the fuel pump had been replaced and old lines just cut off and hanging, with new lines also hanging loosely, and the inside was filthy with mismatching panels.
Instead, I went down to North Saint Paul. I picked up an original-owner, 199k '87 for $1000. Got a reconditioned head, new gaskets and spare intake with throttle body, distributor and all the bolts. Plus it was an SR5 with the 22RE and full gauge set with inclinometer. So if anyone wants to tackle a lifted machine for a toy, head to Eau Claire, WI and look up Randy's Auto Sales.
