Got hit today. Very impressed with T4R

So I'm driving along and slow down for a car in front to turn when WHAM, I get hit from behind by a guy driving a souped up Integra doing 70k. Gave a pretty good jolt but the wife and kids were fine. Pulled over to the side of the road and got out to take a look, expecting to find a lot of damage. To my surprise there was very little to my baby. A few deep scratches and small cracks in the bumper cover and the stock exhaust was bent forward and came out of the hanger. It looks like my aftermarket Curt hitch took the direct hit and pushed the car down and under the bumper. Needless to say the Integra was a write off. Airbags deployed and the front end was pushed right back to the door frames. You could see my hitch imprint in his engine block
I was always impressed with my T4R but now I am even more. Hopefully there is no unseen damage but I will take it to Toyota body shop on Monday for a full inspection and estimate (Might be a good time to upgrade to dual exhaust:thumb3
I didn't have a camera at the time and it's dark now but I will try to post pics tomorrow.

Glad to hear you are OK. I got rear eneded by a car last year. It was low speed collison and he went just under the bumper and hit the hitch. No damage to me, but his front end was bashed in somewhat (not enough to need a tow). I think things might have been worse for both of us if they hit the bumper. Although it looks like our bumpers have a good metal brace supporting them, apparently we have some of the weakest crappiest bumpers compared to other mid size SUVs: So-Called "Rugged" SUVs Sustain Costly Damage in Minor : Texans Insurance Group

The kids were also with me, when we're rear ended by a silverado, I was very impressed, and feel more safer with the 4Runner. We heared the bhoogg!! but didn't feel the impact in proportion to the sound. He must be fast as his front license plate screw punch a hole in the plastic bumper, and the screw went though it. I am surprise its not badly dnted, while the rear reflector is broken. Since I have the unpainted plastic bumper cover, replacing atleast 3 rear bumper components is easy, I saw them in partznet prices ranging from $44.00 to $146, and my parts estimate including shipping is $300+.. but the bodyshop will do this job for $970 including labor. I am in a place were hourly of a good bodyshop is only $55

..and since you will take it to toyota, their insurance will be badly hit too.:biggrin2: yes go for the exhaust upgrade.

But seriously glad you're ok. My wife got rearended a couple times in our 4runner and even thought the bumper looked fine they had to replace it and I suppose the impact absorbing foam underneath it. Do not be surprised if there is hidden damage.

My wife got side swipped awhile ago. I stopped by the body shop while it was apart, I was surprised to see all the foam under the plastic bumper cover. On a side note, I also learned those plastic mouldings that run over the wheel wells and under the doors is expensive stuff. Glad it wasnt her fault!

After closer inspection it looks like the hitch took most of the hit. It's bent inwards in the middle about an inch and is wedged against the spare. The exhaust is bent forward about 2 inches and rubs the frame. It looks like it's bent at the flange behind the muffler. Are there any dual systems that split from that point or are they all from the cat back? The flange bolts look pretty rusted so I'm hoping they'll have to replace the whole thing :wink2:The rest from what I can see is just cosmetic damage to the bumper cover.

All in all very minor damage considering the speed and force of the hit.
Gotta love the 4Runner.

The ladder frame of these 4Runners is like the ones on my Land Cruisers, it extends past the rear hatch and the last cross-member is the rear bumper. The trailer hitch simply bolts to the rear bumper of the Land Cruiser, there may be holes under the plastic cladding for the same on the 4R. My wife has been hit several times in our LCs, lots of damage even to a full-size Ford van, never a scratch on our LCs.

My aftermarket hitch bolts to the frame rails. You can see it just above the exhaust in the pic. I don't think my old factory hitch bolted to the x-member would have fared as well. Best $150 I've spent.

No, a hitch bolted to the rear cross-member may not have done as well. I was just pointing that out to indicate how sturdy the rear frame member is. In Europe, the Land Cruiser has the factory hitch simply bolted to the center face of the rear cross-member, and has a higher tow rating than the US hitch like we have. In other words, that's a beefy piece of steel. The 4th-gen 4R is a Land Cruiser Prado in other countries.
