Got rear ended today...

Icy roads. Coming to a stop on the highway and an old toyota pickup traveling my direction started skidding as he applied his brakes. He crossed lanes and smashed into me at 40+ mph while I was braking. So luckily I wasn't at a complete stop. After exchanging info, I hooked up my tow strap and pulled him out of the ditch.

The kid who hit me ended up being a kid in my Unit. He ended up having to go the the ER. Hoping the best for him.

My T4R is now pulling to the right, rear bumper cover needs replaced, and new rear door. I'm really hoping for NO frame damage. I'll likely replace my rear bumper with an aluminum one... Time to start the research.

Rear ended

Sorry to hear your 4Runner is pulling to the right. Maybe the link arms got bent? Did the truck hit your axle?
Good turn on your part helping the young man who hit you. Hope he's okay too.
Here in SoCal no one knows how to drive in the snow. They don't always do that well in the rain either. :wink2:
 
are there any rear aluminum options outside of hefty fab?

the only front aluminum bumpers I'm aware of are pelfreybilt and hefty

I believe CBI was to start production of AL parts. I would call and ask about status of new offerings.

Yah let us know what you find out. I haven't done much research and didn't think there's a aluminum option yet. If CBI comes up with one I'd be all over it :D

Just wanted to give you some insight if the damage isn't obvious. Back in August I had a Husqvarna lay his bike down in front of my drivers side. Links follow if you want to watch it from both his perspective and mine. We both were recording our adventure.

Pulled hard to the left before the alignment. Had the rig aligned but it was still rubbing the rear fender well. Everything looked great. Was able to finish our trip.

Fast forward to a few months later when I was finishing up one of my many projects, replacing my LCA bushings and found the rear alignment tab bent and the "bucket" that the LCA/bushing fit's into bent. Here'a few pics. Anyway, looks like the 5th gen has a similar LCA. They make stronger tabs for our LCA's.

Just an FYI if you don't detect anything obvious. This might not be an issue at all having been hit from the rear. Good Luck.


Notice the rear tab bent. Was able to adjust the alignment cam away from that tab.

This may have some small affect but my alignment is good after all the front end work I did.

Bad luck

Sounds like another case of bad things happening to good people. Still, you did right in helping the other fellow get back on the road. I just hope that his/your insurance pays for all the damage and that your rig can be repaired as new. - Cheers, Ted
 
Thanks for all the positive responses. USAA is playing hardball. They're trying to force me to get the damages fixed at one of their "USAA Approved" shops, and they're not willing to add anything for the diminished value of my T4R (super infuriating). The damages the shop is listing right now is at $3K, but they said they can't see under the bumper covers so the price will go up depending on what they find... (if they do they work, which is likely NOT the case as I want the cash to get an aftermarket bumper).

I called CBI and they don't have any thoughts on building a rear aluminum bumper as of yet because there's too much flex.

I called Demello and they said they're thinking about building a rear bumper (NOT aluminum), but they're going to do the TACO first. They said they're hoping to have the kinks knocked out by summer time.

I called Hefty Fab and Chris spent tons of time with me talking about his offerings. He's got a REALLY cool new hitch mount for it that's going to raise the hitch 2.5" higher than stock location!!! Shipping is OUT OF CONTROL to get it up here to AK (~$600).

I have USAA and they can be very tough to deal with. You will have to go after the other drivers insurance for diminished value. Also, the fine print in you contract allows them to use substitute parts. Couple of years back, had a RAV4 and semi tire blew out in front of me. Hit the right front and did $11K worth of damage. First pass on repairs used all substitute or salvaged parts and it was terrible. I refused to accept the car and after a week, they finally agreed to repair with new Toyota parts. So in essence paid labor 2x for the work. 2nd time repair was excellent - promptly took and traded it in after that. Good Luck
 
Get a lawyer !!!

I am glad everyone is okay I went through the same thing was rear ended and the truck was totaled, had to fight tooth and nail with the insurance company for the fair market value of the vehicle and had to fight for the 3,000 dollars in taxes I paid, hired a lawyer to take care of it, I am now driving a 2015 Limited white with all the bells and whistles, we pay more than enough for insurance it's time we get some back when we truly need it !

Hmmm, maybe I should drop USAA? I have been with them nearly 30 years.
Two claims, they were not that tough. I know they have changed significantly over the last ten years. New underwriter and they spend tons of resources on advertising and promoting their brand now. In the past I never saw any of this with them. This just costs us all in the end.
Hopefully they are reasonable in the end.
I just had an argument with USAA about their auto payment shenanigans and threatened leaving. They took care of it after I mentioned my tenure and that I did not care if I left them.
